OT: Is there a way to check my cd-key?

I have separate LOD's on both PCs and until now (dsl and wi-fi, whoo-hhoo!) I never worried about having both PCs on-line at same time.

Well, over the course of many install/uninstalls I must have put the same key on both machines since bnet gives me the cs key in use message when I try to use both.

So instead of having to unstall and reinstall the game on both machines, I wondered if there is a way to check what cd-key I am currently using. If it invovles a 3rd-party program, it should probably be PM'd to me.

If there is a way, it'd involve a third party program, and hence, I don't know. On the other hand, uninstalling/reinstalling on your two PC would not take more than what, 15-20 minutes? This post and it's "aftermath" could take as long if not longer...

There's a program floating around in the net (search for "d2-cdkey") that let you switch cdkey, but there's no guarantee of whether it's safe, use at your own risk.

Your're right and that's what I started doing but now one machine freezes everytime I try to reload D2. :-0

well i know that for counterstrike u can view ur cdkey by going through the ms registry(its called something like that, cant remember) so maybe there is a similar method for d2??? any1 know what im talking about here?? ill try to get more info

The only method that you can view your ck-key is a 3rd party program.

You can't see your cd key through the registry due to the fact that the keys are not stored there but rather are stored in 2 mpq files (one file for classic, the other for xpac). MPQView and other mpq file ripping software are also unable to access the cd-keys.

i wondered about that cd key thing too earlier.. we have more than 2 legal copies of d2 and my brotheres tend to handle the cd-key covers without care so i faced it and had to reinstall on all pcs. well for d2 i wouldnt use a hacking program. i believe there is a too high risk that its a trojan and somebody wants my keys.

it finally seems there is no way to pass the install process.

I have three PC's, three sets of keys. I have a text file that I keep on each PC to keep track of which keys are on which PC's.

Actually the programs are perfectly legit, just made by someone who coded some bnet hacks. You can do whatever you want to single player though.
Of course I would get banned for linking to it, oh well.
PS: the key is somewhere in regedit but I wouldn't recommend looking.

I just searched the first 4 characters in my classic key and nothing popped up, mind elaborating as to how it's hidden?

You can't search regedit like that.

Sure you can...I just searched for "exo" as in exodus.battle.net or w/e it is and it found that just fine.

Same thing happened to me when I bought my latest computer.

Like Zappa, I had it written down in a file, but in my case, I wrote it down wrong.
I had to reinstall 3 times on my new computer before it worked.

I wrote the name of the PC using each D2 game and placed a stickie on the case. Problem solved. Works like a charm even after several reinstalls.

Well, duh. "Regedit" is a program for editing your registry. Of course the program "regedit" does not contain any info on your CD-key. I think fenris means the key is somewhere in the registry, and that you could try and look for it with the application "regedit", not in the application "regedit" itself.

Maybe some people didn't read my post before.

The CD key(s) are NOT stored in the registry
The CD Key(s) are stored in the mpq files in your diablo2 instal directory.
Each key (classic/lod) are stored in a seperate mpq file.
mpq editing tools that are used by modders are unable to get to the keys.

Had the same problem as the original poster..and in the end it really turned out to be faster to re-install on both PC's. You can even do it at the same time..so its like only installing one copy. I used this to install all the videos this time as well. The pop up msg started to annoy me (to change CD's)

There is only one way that you could possibly find a key in the registry and that is IF you used the cd-key changer 3rd party program. That stores the cd-keys that you enter into the registry. Kinda a bad idea imo. the registry is increadibly easy to get information from, especially because it was placed there in the first place by a hack.

I wasn't actually being serious there, just responding to double's comment on regedit and the registry being different where he tried to make it seem like I took regedit.exe apart with w32dasm or something to look for my key o_O

(Which I did do just now just for the fun of it...believe it or not the first 4 characters of my key don't show up in disassembled regedit!!)

Oh, and it IS concievable that blizzard has an encrypted key hiding in some randomly named location hidden in there, which is why I asked fenris about it when he first posted.
