Sorry to say, probably not much. Top sorcs probably go for Fathom + Sanctuary shield, is my guess, and the most desired gear is the most valuable.

(i.e Fathom, Shako, HOTO...)

This item should still be ridiclously expensive due to its obscene rarity. It's in TC 87 and it is unique. Just to see an archon staff drop is difficult enough. I'm sure a collector out there would pay nicely for this staff.

That's his only hope of getting a good deal.

A unique Ward and Wire Fleece dropped for me the other day. The best I can hope for, even though it's rare? Probably a Ko or something. When I examine the value of an item, there's a coupla factors : How useful is it to Battle.net players? (i.e Shako is great for all classes). Next corollary: Is the level requirement too high? How rare or how much is it in demand?

Mang Song is useful to (1) class. It's level requirement is otherworldly, with many HC players not reaching level 82. There are no sorc builds that promote usage of a Staff, with a orb/shield combo being better both practically and realistically. Item is very rare, but has no demand.

Sorry, but that's looking at it from a successful trader. ;o

I second that.
Currently I have a lvl 72 sorcy (in HC of course!) and trust me when I tell you that I TOTALLY love the look of a Staff wearing sorcy. The combo orb/shield looks soo stupid and so cookie cutter I barely can't stand it. But this is HC and there are some realities that just can't be denied.
One of them being, a Staff just can't compete with the safety, survival and tons of usefull mods an orb/shield combo offers. Making your Mang's Song pretty much worthless in my book (and I fear in many others sorcy's books as well)

As for the rarity, well that is very subjective. A light mana pot is even more rare from a Hell Baal drop.
How much would you give for a light mana pot?

Well, that's different because you can get a light mana pot from vendors. However, you're right in that no one wants an items just because it's the second rarest item in the game. Blizz should make some insane staves.

Ya. Look at the mods on Mang Song's Lesson.

Besides the -resists (which are extremely good...) it only has +5 skills and 30% FCR. No resists.

An Eschuta's Temper/Fathom/Oculus + Lidless/Splendor/Sanctuary will give you a bunch of resists, nearly the same number of skills. And then you can socket it up for more resists, or use a facet, or use a quick switch for a Lower Resist wand.

Razorswitch was a step in the right direction for staves, with Life/Mana, and resists. Now if it was +3 skills, people would actually use it. :D

If the top staves had +7 skills and resists with FCR....THEN we could talk about using a sexy staff. :D

The main reason why staves are not used in hardcore (specifically) is the lack of protection from a shield. I would say that an easy way to remedy this would be to make a unique staff with damage reduction, 20% seems reasonable since you will have no blocking. On top of this throw on +4 or so skills and a ton of res and other mods such as magic find. If a staff had such defensive mods i would use over occy/death's fathom/lidless combo anyday since i am getting sick of the ice cream cone look of orbs.

Anyone remember "The Protector" staff from diablo 1 which had spikes all around and gave attacker takes damage and stuff? Since blizzard likes to use old unique names from diablo 1 in diablo 2 this would be a perfect name for such a new defensive staff.
