Okay so if I have it correct, Larzuk's quest gives the MAX sockets an item can have, and the horadric formula for socketing weapons gives a random number (well, random as in 1/6 for 1 socket and 5/6 for 2 sockets in a 2-socketed weapon)?

Are there any other ways to socket an unsocketed item? Thanks :)

LArzuk dosent always give max sockets. Its based on the item lvl of the monster who dropped the item. What im saying is: theoretically if a pike dropped in act1(which it cant but bear with me for examples sake) normal, and a pike dropped in act1 nightmare. The act1 normal pike will NOT get 6 sockets but will get less, prolly like 1-2 whereas the pike dropped in act1 nm will get the full 6 sockets. It usually just gives max sockets for high lvl items because they are high enough item lvl. You would never find archon plated in normal but you will find them in hell which aloows them to be high enough item lvl to get max sockets. I hope this helps.. i know im kind of rambling, but yeah.

Note that Larzuk will 1 or 2 sockets randomly with 50% chance for both on magical weapons.

There's a bunch of other socketing recipes over here (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/cube.shtml). Most are not as diverse as Larzuk quest but require much more precise item to be used with.

Sorry, forgot to say my post applies to normal items, not magical or rare items.
