View Full Version : What happens with less saturation

Blizzard reduced the saturation of Starcraft 2 (-15%) after the huge outcry early on, they can do it with D3.

Saturation and brightness reduced
Edit: added pic below into initial post
Which would you say looks more like a Diablo game?
You should post this on the official Diablo III general forum. http://www.battle.net/forums/board.aspx?ForumName=d3-general
I'd love for them to make this change.
try reducing the brightness too
then it'll look much better
i literally just closed photoshop

That second one looks nice. It doesn't have the same Warcraft feel as the first one.

Same pic with reduced brightness:

Might want to be careful with that though, or it'll lead to hacking to remove the darkness.
Ps. @YSM I can't seem to login to the D3 forums ('General login error'), can anyone link to this thread?
This last shot looks perfect. I really hope it gets changed to something like this.

Dont see why you'd need to hack the game for it, how about just adjusting your saturation and brightness settings in your grafic card drivers?

Then let's fight for it!
I don't know what's up with the official forums, but feel free to post these pictures (specifically #1 and #3) in as many places on the net as possible.
......
I was referring to how maphack in D2 made the full screen as bright as it could go.
I do like that last one a lot. I think a lot of contrast would also be cool, like very dark cathedral with the stereotypical piercing beams of light. We'll see in the final game I suppose.

I agree; lower the saturation.

I agree that a darker atmosphere would look nicer. However, with reduced brightness and saturation the colors look too dull. I know Diablo and Diablo 2 had their fair share of dull looking areas but the most memorable ones in my opinion are more visually appealing. I think you are on the right track with your editing but it doesn't quite look visually enticing enough.

Catacombs are supposed to look dull and grey because there are no light sources. If anything, they should look reddish from the candle flames. Not blue, not green.
The outdoors areas have the same problem of random colours (sea blue fog?).
Also, impressive visuals should be the result of impressive architecture: Kurast, Act 4, much of Act 5. Putting random green floodlights in an area with uninteresting architecture will not make it look more interesting.
Agree, this looks more appropriate. Canīt really understand why they werenīt going in this direction themselves.
The new cinematic has the correct "feel". The game world should try and match that IMO.

They made the same mistake with SC2 and reduced the saturation after a few months of fan backlash. And bright colours in SC2 even had an actual gameplay reason: it made it easier to recognise units in a chaotic battle or on Korean TV.
I believe they haven't really made up their mind themselves. Consider the character select page on the website. The barb looks totally death metal in front of a grim background, but the witchdoctor has this WoW green glow and looks very much like an undead.

Needs more blood and guts within the background (think Diablo I and the Butcher).
Totally agree Brother Laz.
BTW, I remember you from the HG:L forums.
You still play that sometimes?

No. :P I quit about two weeks after release. Still working on the mod, new major release upcoming.
Back on topic, I watched the gameplay vids again and the witchdoctor's purple and green is 100% WoW. I mean it's the same kind of purple as shadow spells in WoW and the same kind of neon green as poison spells.

Just those colors purple and neon green don't seem right to me in a Diablo game. Kind of like Tal's armor in d2...it looks like a plastic suit from that Batman and Robin movie.

Giving criticism so early; can't expect less from a professional.
Do you think you'll try to make median with diii?

A nice example of a Gothic Catherdral. Note the details in the arches.
Of course, there are areas of the game that are not Gothic at all, such a s Lut Gholein. I suppose we could presume to give the art guys some lessons in Assyrian or ancient Persian architecture? Hah, I jest. :whistling:
Anyways, thought a real world example may be helpful as a point of reference for those who wonder what the hell we are talking about.
Edit: In response to:

Which I totally agree with. The color saturation issue is easily fixed as has been demonstrated. I haven't seen enough to make a judgement call on art style/direction.

IMO less saturation and brightness
Honestly, your desaturation is taking things way too far. It looks better if you just tone down the GREENS, see my edit for perfection:

best makeover yet
Hi there,
As everybody is moaning about too much colors, i think its time to join the fun.
I have checked my GPU settings and found several optimizations that can reduce the Color intensity.
My GPU is from Nvidia and therefor has more stable drivers with better options (my personal oppinion)
The control panel allows for saturation settings using a graph system just like photoshop.
The 8800 gtx can perform all that, does do DX10 and costs like 230€ or so, and will certainly be enough to play this game.
If you cant swhitch those settings in the gpu settings, most modern games offer those settings themselfs in the options menu or via cfg. settings.
So every pure gamer will be able to customize their game, when it comes to saturation.

I agree that this one looks the best, but I still think it would look good with slightly less saturation in general (maybe 5%).
The 3rd picture in your post Laz looks too dark, and it makes the candles not look real. Light sources need to be bright or else it just looks like theres something wrong.
If you want to do anything reduce the brightness 5% and up the contrast 5%.
Definitely looks great.
The only reason it would look like the top instead is if Blizz raised Saturation to hide the awesome details. :P
GJ and I hope the final product looks dark and evil like that.
Instead of tweaking it forever, just give us an option in game to change saturation and brightness, preferably per color channel: r, g, b. This way everybody will be able to get what they want. WOW fans = 100% everything. Depressed emo goths = 0%. Matrix fans = green 100% rest 0% etc.
Me personally, i am sick of developers making everything dark, because you miss too much. If you ever actually saw a Doom 3 level, they were incredibly detailed. The problem was, iD was too busy showing off how awesome they were at displaying pitch black darkness that you rarely ever got to see it.
Sorry I like the top one, I can tone it down on my own easier.
