View Full Version : Diablo 3 Graphic Changes Poll
To help provide the community and administrators about the communities general consensus about how Diablo 3's graphics "look and should look" topic please cast your vote.
Some feel that the current graphics and color schemes do not agree with the Diablo theme. Others add that it portrays to much of a cartoon feeling.
Here are some linked examples: http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/7807/itshouldrh5.jpg
**Note I did not make, or alter these images and currently the original artist is unknown to me. Amazing job though.**

I personally think it looks fine. What I want to see more of are the actual environments, because that is what will define the real "theme" of the game.
how about a "not really/much" ?
i think it looks great.
color saturation may be seen as a requirement so that people can tell whats going on. an they probably had the brightness turned up for the same reason.
to me the surface areas don't necesarily look brighter, they just look more colorful and detailed.

The second half of that image definitely looks better than the first half, but I wouldn't say that the current graphics do not do justice to the Diablo universe.

after a few weeks of playing the game you won't care about it's graphics anymore
the replayability you get from months or years of playing depends on the gameplay, skills and items
As a long time diablo fan I am impressed with blizzards work with the exception of character/item art.
The first time i seen the barb i thought to myself is that an Orc from wow or a human? I honestly couldn't tell. The armour he was wearing was definately not what i had in mind.
To me diablo has always been about a hero that seems mortal, that seems beliveable fighting against the demons of hell. But most importantly he must look normal.
20 foot swords, 6 foot spikes on armour do not fit in the believeable catagory.
IMHO they need to start over on the char models they look to "wowish" to me.
I hope this does not offend anyone. It comes down to the simple fact that when i want to play diablo I want to play diablo, not wow.
That said I have no arguments about improving the inventory system or other subsystems of the game but the characters must look and fight accurately.
Right now they don't look like they are.

watch out when you say "i want them to look normal"
otherwise we'll have diablo 3 look like age of conan where the next-gen graphics are spent on rendering leather rags that look the same at level 80 as the stuff you had at level 20
The Images are by VonVentrue. I already posted them in the other thread on page 5:

All I am trying to say with my comment is that a sword better look like a sword. For example when I tried WOW with some friends I did not like the artwork for the weapons. They did not look like anything remotely close to something a "hero" should even be able to pick up. However, it seem WOW was designed to have more of that "cartoony" look. I am ok with that....for WOW..
One thing I liked about the old game was for the most part the weapons were based on historical versions from our past (the human race). This made them seem more convincing to me. I liked that mideival (sp?) feel.....
Does anyone remember Nox? D3 looks a lot like a Nox 2, where instead of sprites, we're using Polygons. That said, it's okay. Anyway, I'm not surprised that it looks like WoW from the classic RPG perspective.
I do agree with GUFF on the armor issue. More sensible armory with so much spikes and OPENED spaces would be great.
Good point about the weapons GUFF
I love the fact that the weapons in DII are based on real things and aren't some weird fantasy contraptions. DII has a reality vibe to it, it's not cartoon fantasy =(
The artstyle doesn't fit the game at all!
Just a week ago I was at a museum and saw a katar. How many non D2-players even know what a katar is? I love that about the game
They're not going to change the artstyle though, of course. But it does make me cry inside
Diablo II is sort of like a gun masturbation game for medieval weapons, and who wants gun fetish games to look cartoony? They're supposed to look real, that's the point

Yep, I hope they change their art direction but I also doubt they will.
I think the same goes for armour as well.
This game needs to feel like i could slip on a set of armour sharpen a sword, grab a shield and wade into the legions of hell......
Although it does not have to look quiet like shown in the altered screen shots, I do feel that a change is needed. Nothing to drastic with the character models or anything, just more appropriate shading, contrast and coloring. Close to Diablo 1 would be perfect.
As for the poll, I am not sure why it is not working. I was under the impression that the "close poll time limit" was option so didn't enter one. That may be the reason. Still all the ideas and suggestions are great.

If anyone remembers the concept art from the older diablo series a lot of it also is very stylized just like the new d3 artwork. Keep in mind they are concepts. A lot of things are not completely set in stone yet. (ok, mostly gameplay but still). I dont think its panic time yet until we see more images released along with the other classes.
I will say that the architecture and the overall environment looks hella cool. From what I saw so far there was certainly that stoney gothic feel to some of the areas.
One promising thing was that the devs mentioned was that they really liked the diablo series handling of weapons, so this should bode well.
But overall I agree with GUFF on the weapons issue. No 19.5 foot swords on main characters please.

Well, the way I think of it is that this is only one environment. If all of the environments look similarly and not a single one of them dark and broody, I'll be a bit disappointed.
Lots of people are complaining about the graphics while millions of people played Diablo 2 in the amazing 800x600 resolution we got stuck with without any problems. In the end, gameplay will dictate if you play or not.

Just a bit disappointed is all and don't understand why not make a good thing great. I think Diablo 1 was the best for the creepy atmosphere feeling within dungeons and caves, it just didn't work that well on the outside though. Diablo 2 had great outside textures. D3 outside looks ok, bit more worn and ancient feeling would help a lot, but as most are saying its really lacking in the dungeon gloom and creepiness that we all loved.

not voting.
as with diablo 1 & 2, all i really care about is the gameplay. if it keeps me up late at night, when i know i gotta get to work in a few hours, then it'll be perfect.

The issue for me is that the art direction feels rather far removed from the Diablo series. It strikes me as an uncomfortable WoW/Titan Quest hybrid, with the colorful environments and comical shoulder pads.
To bring up technical aspects such as resolution options or 3D vs 2D is missing the point.
Between two games with equally compelling gameplay, I'd choose the one with better, more coherent and consistent art direction over the one with a shiny new engine, if that's what it came down to.
EDIT: Oh, and I think the edited shots are GREAT. HUGE improvement!

The graphics have become too 'cartoonish' for my taste.
Honestly, the changes proposed by some people have been completely retarded.

This is why gamers aren't game developers, because they have no clue what they are talking about.
Graphics look great, and after seeing just a smidge of the game, they start babbling about the stupidest things.
*sigh*

the only graphical aspects that need immediate attention are the stupid animations around the weapons. I hate glowing weapons with a passion. Maybe only very special weapons should glow or be on fire. They are cheesy and very distracting.
It looks great as it is but your version looks better crutex
At first I was skeptical of the new design scheme of D3, its obvious at least some of the designers are ex World of Warcraft developers, but now that they are providing game play videos and commentary of what they are aiming for, I’m beginning to really like the way things are looking…
