Hello everyone, I first wanna say its very good to hear that Diablo III is in the progress, very fun and fresh to hear now in the hot summer indeed.

Anyway I hope I dont bore you with my makeover of a diablo III screenshot, yeh another one..

It looks like Blizzard have a solid 3D engine with some really good flow in the animation (reminds of Starcraft 2)
But yeh there is just something missing like many have pointed out, so I decided to remaked a picture just to play around with colors and stuff, mostly just for fun.

I increased the constrast a tiny bit and changed the colors to what I think is more correct to the typical Diablo feeling.
I also added some shadows to the statues and the "railing on the stairs" or what I should call it, cause it looked pretty boring before.
I freehand painted some cracks here and there and added some highlight lines (mostly around the statues) to bring them out from the darkness and ofcourse the most important, blood!

Anyway I hope you like my view of it, I bet we can trust blizzard anyway! just fun to do these kind of stuffs late at night =)

I think that looks AMAZING! That's what D3 should look like.

Blood already appears on the landscape when you kill things, along with other terrain effects. There aren't any in that shot but that doesn't mean there couldn't be, if you kill something there, or on another set of stairs that has blood by default.

Otherwise the "After" shot looks bland, dull and lifeless. Greys and browns are so 14 years ago.

This is a new game, it isn't "Diablo 2 in 3D". Start seeing the graphics for what they are - a new look for a new generation of the game, not what they aren't.

It's got a great dark and gloomy effect going on, but I must say that the character probably shouldn't blend so well into the scenery. Sure, it looks good, but not every one is pale and not every one wears colorless armor. ;)

The after shot looks lifeless? DAMN RIGHT IT DOES! It matches the environment the character is in.

Diablo should scare you.

One of the problems with D2 initially was it isn't really scary a lick.

But, it is once you go inside (or it once was).

But, I am FIND with the opening act being someone colorful but becoming more decayed and black the farther you go.

It lends a sense of progression. Color can be a very useful tool telling a player where they are in a game.

I like it. As for what Mythor said, we don't need a warcraft feel to it. That's what it's coming across to me like. I really like your makeover.

I agree that the second one looks too dull. I prefer the first one.

I think you might have overdone it a little, but I agree it looks more "Diablo".

Blizzard really needs to hire this guy and stick him on the art team lol.

I really hope Vortexh that you put all your work and ideas together and submit them to blizzard for suggestions. It seems like a large part of the community supports you and the way it should look. I'm one for sure.

Self-cast shadows on the background would require quite a bit of graphics horsepower.

These alters I see again and again seem to be a bit much, but I do encourage you all who have the ability to do this to keep presenting your ideas on forums, here and especially, on the Blizzard site. Hopefully they will then find some common ground between the green hue, and this "After" picture we have here.

Here is a updated version, changed a few minor stuff so it should look abit better now.
By the way, thanks for the comments everyone. but yeh im aware I overdid it, added shadows and all^^
reminds more of Doom or so now I guess, but yeh its all fun to see.

Anyway I just did this for fun and I by no means dislikes the currently graphics in the game. so take it all with a grain of salt.

I imagined them with more grays, as in the second shot... vs all the blue tints they are using. But hey, I'd buy it either way...

I like them both. I do agree that adding a bit more red tints is indeed more like the gloomy D1 feel than the blue tints.

Both images are colourfull, yours just as much as the original. (at least, your second one. the first was to dark).

But the development team have already done a few revisions and they are satisfied with the "before" image. So I doubt there is going to be big changes. Of course you are free to point this out and there is most certainly things that can be used from your conversions, such as the cracks in the statues.

Great Job!! Post it into the official forum immediately!!

We should start an internet address on behalf of original Diablo palettes being implemented in Diablo 3.

All that green/blue hue/lightning should be replaced with dark/gloomy lightning and red palettes instead of blue/green ones.

Red is the color of the torches in the caves. Red is the color of the blood of the fallen. Red is the color of hell and brimstone. Red is the color of Diablo.

wow great job!
D3 should be dark and creepy, not bright and lively like WoW

Everyone's saying D1 and D2 were so dark and gloomy - when in fact D2 was bright as hell, no pun intended. Act II? Without the Serpent curse it was like the Riviera on a bright day. There is colour everywhere in D2, bright, cartoony colour.

I like the After image though. Perhaps it's the green tinge in the original that is throwing us off... Need more video!

And trust me (or anyone else who says this) - D3 will not look like WoW.

Your 2nd try was better than the first try. However directional lighting isn't something we're going to see in the diablo franchise simply because of the randomized levels. It would make it incredibly difficult if not impossible to program and it would really add to the gpu overhead of the game.

I love the blood splatters you put in, but I just also wanted to note that they're cool in that picture but they might not be cool in ALL the environments. Also, the bloom is too high, turn it down a bit. Leave the bloom to the enchanted weapons so that they dont have to be ultra bloomy to look distinctive.

Also, perhaps theres a reason this dungeon is somewhat green. Perhaps other dungeons are slated for the more brown / grey / other colors.

The dark desaturated pictures are cool to look at but you have to consider if it would be cool to play a game that was like that. you run a huge risk of having a game that feels really boring really fast. See hellgate london.

its not the colors, its the rounded edges and exadurated features in everything (lack of subtlety) that make it cheesy. I don't think that the outdoor areas are cartoony but the dungeon areas are.

Bland and sepia-toned .. looks good as a screenshot but wouldn't be fun to look at for very long if you were actually playing through it.

So glad you said this. EVERY new game is a fancy shade of brown or grey (GoW, GTA4, HL2, Doom 3). I like the work that the original poster did - very creative. I won't be buying a brand new video card for D3 if it is only going to display 2000 shades of grey and brown.

I really don't know why some people are going crazy on the game's choice of colors. You are all basing your argument on a single screenshot. Have you even watched the gameplay video? There's also some rain you know, have you seen it? It's so dark that I almost had to bring up my brightness on my screen to see what was going on.

Just because ONE area had a bit of color, doesn't mean that the WHOLE game will be filled with colors.

Also, we haven't even seen all the areas of the game... so how can you go about making such huge assumptions? Pretty pathetic.

Also about blood, sure blood comes from monsters so its no need for more blood thats right.. however dont you think some areas should have blood? if there is a butcher room, dead bodys and so on, it still adds to the atmhophere of the game. and second question is, how long does the blood from monsters usual last? depends on game I guess but it usual dissapeir quite fast, just as footsteps.

Well to start with, im not really going crazy about the colors, I decided to do this just for the fun of it, and I dont mind whatever blizzards desides to do, its up to them and I trust them with it which I wrote..
Uhm no we are not basing this on a single screenshot. And yes I have seen the video many times.
I saw rain but that has nothing to do with this, weather effects or not, I also saw a rainbow in the rain, but I dont mind that.
and no the game isnt dark, your screen was. and last there was several area's that was bright colored, but yeh doesnt mean the rest of the game is.

The corpses in the gameplay video dissapear within seconds at times. Like, really, really alarmingly fast. If they lasted like 50x as long as they last in the videos I wouldn't mind the environments lacking the random blood... if it makes sense for the environments to lack such things.

I think a meeting between the first and second shot in the original post would be nice. The blood's a nice touch. If there's a chance to use it, I like seeing the signs of the people the monsters killed before you got there.

Did you spend all of act 2 in the palace? It was bright, yeah, but everything look worn and faded. Aside from those gangly guys that turned bright red, raiders? I never understood that.

I like the After image though. Perhaps it's the green tinge in the original that is throwing us off... Need more video!
I think the green ambient light is what's throwing it off.
