We all know he's going in there. Its not Diablo with out Diablo.
So how do we end up fighting him again. Who brings him back.
Use some imagination..

The worldstone being shattered to stop baal's mad plans opens a crack in the void. Just the memory of Diablo was strong enough to find that hole and return to the realm, without corporeal form, pulled back by the whispered tales of those unable to forget. Slowly, as the feel of him in the air lingers, his mindless, formless power grows. He enters alone. Only he has the will such that his very name refuses to vanish. Not a true mind or being. Just the dust of terror. The whispered myth in the wind.

A lost tribe in the hills. They sense him and are afraid. They perform a ritual written long ago, by those long devoured... a mad ceremony to banish. But, it was written eons past for the unspeakable by those who served the Lord of Terror. For a time when he himself was a faint memory. When the unspeakable event of his defeat might occur. Unthinkable. But, only he saw deeply amongst the three.

He bursts forth from their foolish ritual and is quickly the only living thing in the deserted valley. The woods are more than silent. The night tears asunder with a bellow of unspeakable rage.

Diablo walks again.

I want lazarus back! he is the best villian in the diablo franchise! If he is in, he could be the one who once again helped diablo to return to the mortal realm.

PS: he could be the leader of those cultists.

The Worldstone shattered at Tyreal's blow. Our only hope to stop Baal's mad plans. It's power was as of the Gods, but even that mysterious structure was imperfect and not intended to be ripped from the hidden seals it was meant to protect. A crack in the void. An imaginary imperfection in the seal buried far below the great keep in a place men cannot imagine. All might have been well but for our inability to conquer fear. Destruction can be repaired. Hatred passes as quickly as friendship. But fear... Fear lives with us like a soft blanket. It drives us forward. And it holds us back. Just the memory of Diablo was strong enough to find that trembling thread in the impenetrable and return to the realm, without corporeal form, pulled back by the whispered tales of those unable to forget. He enters alone. Not a true mind or being. Just the dust of terror. The whispered myth in the wind. Slowly, as the feel of him in the air lingers, his mindless, formless power grows.

Time passes. The years roll on... until.....

An old man walks slowly through the woods without knowing why. He has walked through hill, swamp, and mountain for weeks. His emaciated body is done for this world. His final thought is to remember... his last conscious effort is to push the memory away with his heart pounding and bile in his mouth. He remembers the sense of terror that washed over him as he sat up in his bed, the dream clinging to him like a tangible miasma. He remembers the terror that clamped onto him forever and then sunk into his bones. He remembers the hint of anguish at being forever lost in an empty place. And a terrifying taint of anger. A wrath that poured determination into him so strongly that it was like a physical blow. And a desire for revenge. Until all the world burns. He knows he lives only because of the power of the dream that will not end. And will not forgive.

He reaches the forgotten graveyard in the wreck of a village not even the forest will touch. Rain has barely softened the char on timbers that litter the grounds. The only thing standing is a small sign that hangs over a branch. Blown by the wind or by force he knows and cares not. If he could have read, it would have held just one word for him. Tristram.

Without knowing how, he finds a place in the midst of a collection of what were once markers of the dead. And with his bare hands he digs.... Clink.... He stops and immediately grabs his head at a spike of wrath that he may have damaged the treasure he seeks. His eyes begin to roll into his shrunken sockets but his back stiffens with a strength never intended for his frail, awkward limbs.

With the care of a mother handling a babe, he exhumes the skeletal remains with a light touch. Over hours he lays the body out, not a shard of bone or a finger out of place. His limbs fall to his side. His head lolling to one side. It is almost done. Even fear cannot drive him much longer. He stands. Without a change in expression he stabs his stiffened fingers into his own chest. They retract without a stumble with his own beating heart. With empty eyes, he opens his mouth and words never heard by any mortal race grate into the blackness. And his heart burns. With the last word, his form blackens and crumbles to dust, the heart falling with a thump onto the shattered bones of the unknown. They explode, shattering the night with a flash that is gone to quickly to have been real.

The forest almost seems to hold it's breath.

Without warning the trees bend nearly double, almost whimpering in the wall of wind that carries... something scabrous. With a flash that punctures the very earth, lightning consumes the shallow grave and most of the remaining hints that a town once stood here. With a sound like all the sorrow and suffering since the dawn of days the storm stops and the clouds disperse. A form rises from the ground. Haltingly. Then with increasing smoothness. It's head is down. It stands thus for many minutes. With inhuman speed the figure leaps to the top of the crumbling, stone wall and screams with a voice like knives being dragged over granite coated in tears. The howl goes on for what seems an age. Horrible beyond words. The woods seem to wilt.

At last it ends. And Lysandus the betrayed stands tall in the shadows of the town that once claimed him and nearly all the world. But, he remembers nothing of such things. All he knows is that his master is gone. He seems to listen. Motionless. His eyes come alight with the fires of hell. He strides purposely into the night. He stops once, at the wreckage of a cathedral. The voice of hopelessness rends the night.

"The Lord of Terror will walk again".

I think it has something to do with Belial and Azmodan.

I mean I don't think they just sit in hell and do nothing right :whistling:

But Belial and Azmodan are both against Diablo. They want to take the throne of hell from him.

Infact they might as well be the main villians, or the ones for the possible Xpac, just like Baal was.

Touched my post up some. I don't think that's it. But, it would be cool.

You could replace lazarus with Diablo himself, or the graveyard with a tribal village that tries to perform an excorcism and releases him.

So many ways to do it.

I don't know why, but I just hated my post, so I changed it. Feel free to ignore it.

I believe the comet from the sky is tyreal, and his now corrupted or evil & summons diablo back to life in some way/shape or form.

I like the "granite coated in tears" part.

As for the meteor, I think it's Diablo coming in from outer space, as suggested by the splash image.

Diablo, Mephisto and Baal have all been defeated and had their soulstones destroyed. I would be surprised if any of them could return to Sanctuary. As such, Blizzard might have decided to implement a new Prime Evil.

"When Deckard Cain returns to the ruins of Tristram's Cathedral seeking clues to new stirrings of evil, a comet from the heavens strikes the very ground where Diablo once entered the world. The comet carries a dark omen in its fiery being and it calls the heroes of Sanctuary to defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells – and even the failing luminaries of the High Heavens itself." - Blizzard

This confirms that the comet falls from the Heavens (which would imply the Heaven realm, not the Earth's sky) and is most likely the source of evil that spreads through Sanctuary in D3. This illustration has many similarities with Lucifer's fall from Heaven. His fall is often illustrated as a comet striking Earth and splitting up into three sixes before impact. Blizzard's text also says the luminaries of the High Heavens are failing. According to the Bible, this is what caused Lucifer and his followers to be banished from Heaven. He led a rebellion against God, which certainly upset and stirred God, Jesus and the rest of the Archangels.

"And the Heavens shall tremble" - Blizzard

In the Bible, it is said that Lucifer's fall caused the Earth to tremble. He still aims to return to Heaven and take the throne of God. In other words - to make the Heavens tremble. Lucifer is commonly considered to be Satan, or the Devil, which in Spanish translates to Diablo.

When the Worldstone was destroyed, the barrier that separated the mortal realm from the Hells and Heavens disappeared. Maybe the angels banished from Heaven during Lucifer's rebellion unexpectedly fall to the mortal realm when the barrier no longer exists to stop them from doing so.

Blizzard might have done their own take on Lucifer and have him as their Prime Evil in D3. It might even be Tyrael who takes Lucifer's place and is banished from Heaven.

There is zero chance they will make a game without diablo in it. Unthinkable.

If it is thinkable, I don't like to think about it. When did we destroy diablo and baal's soulstones? Did that happen in supporting books?

I do think that Tyreal or another fallen angel will e a major act boss in this game. I also think that that monster shown, be it act or end boss will be a major player.

I just find it impossible to imagine a Diablo came that does not manage to incorporate Diablo himself. If his essence infused another entity, was drawn back into the world to fuel the power of some other demon, or found it's own way back based on man's inability to forget him, they will find some way to have him in the game.

I would have to seriously sit down and think aobut it if he wasn't in game. He IS the franchise.

thats a good question. But i also want to know how the girl in the preview fits into the story cause we see her twice and one of those times she was running from something big, looked like she was in trouble

How about out here is the one resurecting big ol' D as the only way to stop whatever Ebil we are facing?
It's a big strange, but that's why it's cool(:

To the best of our knowledge, the soulstones were created to contain the prime evils. The Prime Evils corrupted the soulstones, which could possibly mean their destruction did little more than release their spirits and allow them to, over time, regain their full power. This could additionally explain why the destruction of the worldstone was followed by 20 years of relative calm, compared to the much anticipated invasion from hell.

If the soulstones were created to contain the prime evils, it is entirely possible that their destruction would release them, especially since they were wholey corrupted by the time we got our hands on them in Diablo 2.

Alot of their power would have been spent reassuming their mortal forms and abilities. Having been physically defeated shortly after taking their form, their spirit would be incredibly weak. Chances are good they would head back to hell to gain their strength and reassert their will over the lesser evils (who no doubt took the chance of taking over once Baal was defeated)

I am thinking along the same lines that Tolkien took with his evils. After Saurons first death in Numenor, his spirit was very weak and took hundreds of years to regain his strength for another assault on the world.

Hello Jim

Intersting, didn't think about that. However, Sauron's spirit remain the same, his power grew through the corruption influence he had. Making people fight for you take time... Don't understand how the Nazgul fit that theory though.

Although this isn't a LotR discussion(:

Thread hijack? ;P

But no, i think it is certainly a train of thought that should be considered. The soulstones originally were made to contain the Prime Evils. The PMs corrupted them which allowed them to reassume their forms if the stone was embedded in a 'host' body. There is no telling what the destruction actually did.

Edit: The Nazgul were slowly turned to wraiths by the Nine rings given to the human kings. The rings power were tied to the One Ring, so even with Sauron not at full power, they were still under his dominion due to the One Ring still being in existence, even if its location was unknown.

Hello Jim
30-06-2008, 12:09
Nono, I meant IMO, as I said against you option, the spirit of Sauron was the same. His powers grew because it took time to corrupt people. However, if his spirit was the same, why the Nazgul didn't served him up until he grew much stronger? Maybe it's because he couldn't risk them, or didn't need them yet.

And for non-hijack:
I think Diablo will be resurected in the end of the game. You'll come to the last battle seeing the priests resurect him, realising it's too late. And ofc, will fight him and end the game.

When Sauron was captured and taken to Numenor, the Nine were scattered without his power and influence and went into hiding. They remained under his power the entire time, but were weakened. Once his spirit returned to the strongholds in Mordor, the nine found their way there again where they also rebuilt their strength.

Sorry for the tangent people :D

ya know a couple people have already either said or mentioned it in here but for those for those of you who don't want to be spoiled DO NOT read further:

it's Tyrael, in the game art section there is a bit showing his transformation into the version of Diablo at the end of the cinematic sequence, and yes with Blizzard there are NO coincidences (front image of D2 = the wanderer (ie Diablo), front image of LOD = Baal, front image of D3 = Tyrael (ie the final badguy)

enough said

now we just gotta wait another couple years to see how they're gonna let it all play out

Care to link which one you actually mean? I see 3 artworks of Tyreal in the artwork section. 1 is sketching without his multitude of wings (or whatever the hell they are). 1 is of him somewhat floating, the other is the sequence image that shows him exploding in what appears to be a flash of light.

I assume the one you are pointing to is this one (http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/_images/artwork/ss35-hires.jpg) which shows nothing more than him being enveloped in a blinding flash of light. No transformation to be seen.
