I agree, if there were things that we wouldn't immediately find out through playing that'd be awesome.
Oh man, I forgot all about those.
I can see, what you see not.
Vision milky, then eyes rot.
When you turn, they will be gone.
Whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be!
Shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind.
Cast down into the halls of the blind.
A truly cornerstone moment in gaming, I think.
Agreed, Kaeros. It's perhaps one of the best, creepiest, and most immersive moments in Diablo lore.
It seemed like Gloams are the inheritor of the Hidden's cloak ability, but Gloams are scary for other reasons.
I'll 3rd that motion. They were always my favorite monsters in D1. I liked overlords too; just so solid and implacable and relentless, and they had that lovely grunting sound when you turned them into pin cushions. They were kind of recreated by Urdurs, and the base model was used for the butcher/smith/hellforge hammer guy, so they're probably gone as a base monster type.
I'm glad to see upgraded goatmen in D3. They were among my d1 favorites, with that splatting hit sound and the great death gurgle. They were nowhere near as much fun in d2.
I also missed the various knights from D1. I played a D2 mod at one point that moved those guys in, and they were very impressive even in the d2 world. Their sharply colored armor and war-like stances were much more intimidating than the bestial D2 minotaurs.

The Overlords\Butcher styled deamons with plumpy body, huge mittens and ponty ears\horns sure looked very nice.
Chaos lords with lightning throw and fast melee attack, looked like Diablo on a diet but were also cool.
The advocates/evil mages were annoying, yet fun to watch 'em dying.
The devilkin from D1 not D2 were purdy too.
Would be nice if these make a return.
they had a new variety of charge beasts in the demo i was glad to see those :jig:

I'll be pleased if we have monsters that attack with even a smidge of tactics. Just something other then an all out rush at your character or standing and firing.
Stuff like luring you into a trap with a weaker monster or different monsters working together.
My favorite monsters from DII were the frog-like things that were a relatively rare spawn. Saw variations of them mostly in the jungle and in the Palace cellar. Their sounds and death animations just nailed it for me.
Also a big fan of the spiders.

Death Knights, complete with death animation and sounds.
and the spitting death acid dogs. I had a great love/hate relationship with them.

I was happy to see those buffalo like things in D3 movie, one of which landed a charge attack from almost off the screen. Those charging rhino-men in the D1 caves were a terror for sorcs and rogues, not just for their accurate and long range charge, but for the rapid goring attack they'd unleash after they nailed you. There was nothing in D2 that was a danger from a distance, other than melee attackers, and even they were pretty weak. (other than the early days of msle, of course.)
Nice when there are enemies that keep you on your toes, even when they're not in melee range.

LOL Maybe a Arrow shape monster attack? Standing your ground and pulling you spear as a defence to charge attack? Smart monster can be a really cool idea.
One thing is for sure, they should NOT remade Dolls.

Hidden were awesome. Definitely wanna see them back. Also second the acid dogs idea.

Hehe there were so many great monsters in Diablo 1 I would die to see with modern day graphics!
- Acid hounds
- Overlords
- HIDDEN!!
- Knights (coolest death animation)
- Goatmen (I like their sounds and the way they spin around when taking damage!)
Many of the monsters really felt tough in Diablo 1. Like their animation, sound effects and so on. Not so much on Diablo 2. I hope that the numerous links to Diablo 1 on the official page could hint that they've really taken in the critics from Diablo 2.
In Diablo 1 you had to use tactics with monsters like Acid hounds and rhino-men. You had to act clever instead of pure supremacy based on items/number of hours played. I'm satisfied that there was many different monsters in the gameplay demo, the charging monsters, cultists, skeletons with shields, and monsters getting their weapons stuck in the ground if you dodge them. Those really add to the gameplay and ease off the repetitiveness.

As far as hidden goes:
Signed. Bring back the hidden.
In fact, Bring back the D1 AI please.

Dear god NO!!! I used to have nightmares of trying to collect my sorc's gear after getting mowed down by a bunch of acid hounds and having a room full of acid pools to manuver through :(
Hidden were awesome! I hope they'll be back in D3, as well as Advocates (I still love the name Blizzard had given to these guys) and D1 styled Knights. :punk:

They could have some of those witchdoctors from Act 3 maybe throw out dolls that would head straight for you. Would make me red in the head every time I saw those 2 little dudes standing untop of each other :).
Hidden are by far the coolest creature to ever grace a Diablo game...hands down.
As far as monsters keeping you on your toes, I really liked the concept of Vipers in D2, from valley of the snakes. I wouldn't mind seeing those back, with maybe a buffed up charge attack. Groups of those could play HELL on your faster hit recovery.
Now that i think about it d1 did have a much cooler arsenal of enemies than d2. The only moment in d2 that i can think of where i truly felt threatened was the first few times i fought diablo. He was so freaking fast and powerful, took me forever to beat when i only played single player. I actually installed d1 a few months ago and vowed not to dupe anything and the game got to be pretty scary, so i can't say it was because i was like 8 when i played it.
The feel of d1 was definetly superior for it's time, but d2's gameplay was so perfect that it's impossible to pass up. Hopefully d3 with find a nice balance.

Yeah, more of the game depending on hit recovery. That was one of the things that really kept you on the toes in Diablo 1.
Hidden, Knights and Advocates.
Those id really like to make a return in D3.
Who know, since we're going back to tristram we just might see some of them :p
I can just see it, wandering down the Cathedral to save Cain, and Hidden appears all over. Gonna freak me out.

Hidden, Knights and Advocates.
I second that lotion.
Advocates are pretty cool. I would have liked to see the act4 mages use teleport. They are, imo, the toughest monsters and with teleport it could have been more awesome.
The Storm Lords are kick *** with their double attack. 2-3 gang up on you and you are basically stunlocked to death. :D

I 2nd that; and not because of their blood star and cursing ;)

I forwarded this thread to Erich Schaefer, who though he now works at Flagship, was one of the 3 creators of D1 and is chiefly responsible for almost all the monsters in the game. He mentioned this in reply, and I thought it was cool and worth sharing:
The Hidden were really funny because they were strangely animated by mistake... the right arm swings with the right leg, not opposite like real people... but it gave them a neat flavor.
I don't believe I'd ever noticed that consciously, but now that I think about it... oh yeah! No wonder they look so squatty and disquietingly lurchy when they walk.

3rd :)
I just loved them in d1 - the d2 versions were poor wannabees.

I like the look of them, actually. They look better, imo.
The HP Mana curse thing was a pain. Same for Iron Maiden. I hope those characterbreakers are not in the game.

There are al lot of cool monsters in DII!
Here the ones I really want to return, the coolest monsters in my opinion.
Spike Fiend
Fetish
Scarab Demon
Sabre Cat
Greater Mummy
Sand Raider
Baboon Demon
Blunderbore
Frog Demon (Slime Prince)
Tentacle Beast
Finger Mage
Megademon (Balrog)
Oblivion Knight
Vile Mother
Death Mauler
Demon Imp
Succubus
Moon Lords (Minotaur Demons)
Defiler
Reanimated Horde (Revenant)
Bring back Gharbad the Weak!
Bring some other monsters hiding in barrels other than the maddened skeleton. Not so far as the end boss (Heh, Diablo-in-a-box) but perhaps a group of fallen hiding in a stack of barrels that all come out when you bust one. The fallen from D1 though, they looked MAD compared to the new ones. I also see the skeleton summoner, reminds me of the fallen shaman resing and such. The hidden provided a true horror element to the game of Diablo unlike many beasts in Diablo II. In the trailer we see a -damn can't read the name- rhino thingy. Reminds me of some other D1 beasts. Looks like they may bring back the horror, if only by a different name.

Horror in Diablo I???
I think the diablo I game sucks compared to diablo II...
It's unplayable.

Heh I might have to re-install to see this.
The hidden are easily my favorite Diablo monster to kill. The combination of the gurgling sound and blood splattering up in the air when their heads fall off is sooo satisfying.

i fully agree with this entire statement. goatmen were always my favorite class and i was really let down with the d2 version
as for the hidden, i would love to see them return though i dont see it happening. they had my favorite death animation in d1
overall i would say the monsters in d1 were better than those in d2. d2 had alot of annoying monsters(flayers, sand leapers...) but then again d1 had the most annoying monster ever in the black death(some might argue acid spitters). i really hope we dont have any annoying monsters this time around though i am sure there will be something in the game that i have to endlessly chase for no damn reason

Oh!
There is one thing I would like seeing in D3 from D1 to some extent.
The zombies in D1 are sooo well done. The grunts they make when they attack sounds so cruel and loud. When they die you really feel like they die and slam to the ground.
The ones in D2 felt to light and to quiet.
The Butcher was my biggest fear as a young d2 addict. xD

Bring back
Death Knights.
Claw Vipers.
Original look of the Succubi
Charger Demon.
Maelstrom Demon.
Mages that actually are badass at teleporting.
"Something for you I am maaking. Again, not kill Gharbaad. Live and give goood! You take this as proof I keep woord"
I love all of D1
--
I want the fear, the dark feeling and gothic story back in the next Diablo, even at high levels!
King Leoric and the "Halls of the Blind" were my favourites in D1.
Please Blizzard, don't ruin the game just to adapt to multiplayer!
p.s: Duriel gave me almost the same cold shiver of the Butcher with that creepy "Looking for Baal?".. and then he slaughtered me.
p.p.s: Prime Evils don't chat between them, expecially not in english! Mystery=more fear, talking scary monsters=less fear :tombstone:
