It seems that the new DIII community forums are missing the one thing that makes dii.net so inviting; Off Topic Threads. So put on your voodoo mask , grab a cold one, and raise some OT, or zombie walls, or both.
Keep in mind forum rules (http://forums.diabloii.net/faq.php?faq=rules) still apply, so keep the foul language, flaming, and mindless spam out (I can read all I want about how people are getting uppity about the possible lack of necromancers in DIII in the rest of this particular fourm).

Oddly, your choice of topic, is exactly how I picture the WD speaking during the game.
I've stuck this thread for a bit, because I found the title amusing and would like to see it more. :)

Funny you mention that Es, I was originally thinking of naming the thread something to the effect of: Which doctor? Witch doctor?

I'm trying to get into the spirit of the WD, so I'm making a mask like that. I've already got a cardboard box and grass. All I need is some crack and a place that looks like the jungle. The crack is the easy part. I don't think the zoo will allow me near the jungle.

Just don't get into any trouble with the law for your cracked-out, grass-wearing, jungle hobo antics. ^_^
He gives new meaning to "Blow" pipe?
we were joking about a d3 OT forum in the chat yesterday, and how weird a concept it would be. after all, why do you need more than 1 OT forum, when the purpose of such a forum is to not talk about the game? And yet here we are, 12 hours later, and it's a serious request. heh heh heh
Queen Mebd
01-07-2008, 02:21
I don't know about others, but as someone who doesn't play as much as I used to, the OT's are nice place to shoot the breeze. I also think there's nothing wrong with each forum having it's own OT; they all have their own character (probably because it's the same regulars and inside jokes). Speaking from experience most of the older shapeshifting druid players on our respective realms are pretty tightly knit and have spent hours pubbing together, so the druid off topic forum seems like a much more natural place to keep up than say the PvP OT (though Kiba will still spam that for the heck of it).
I think it'd be neat if OT's eventually sprang up in some (though not necessarily all) of the d3 forums as those begin to take on a character of their own. I can see myself enjoying a witch doctor should I end up playing d3 when it comes out, so I decided to plop one down here and make it a little more hospitable.

So, how many WDs are going to be named some derivative of Alvin and/or Chipmunk?
Furthermore, there has got to be a WD-40 joke around the bend somewhere...
Mad Mantis
01-07-2008, 13:40
Well the WD seems like the class I would be spending the most amount of time on, so I figured the same thing as Queen Mebd, why not come over here. Most sub-forums attract a certain kind of people. It is not surprising that they would also like to OT together. And OT threads are great for those comments that just don't fit anywhere else.
So, how many WDs are going to be named some derivative of Alvin and/or Chipmunk?
I'm going for Endugu (http://www.diabloii.net/wiki/Superuniques#Witch_Doctor_Endugu). But I think I must be quick to take the name on B.Net.

Wikipedia has a handy list of fictional doctors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_doctors).
Character sub-forums need OT's , there like-minded players can talk jibberish in between their "strafe or multi" debates, while the OT forum consist of rather lot of serious OT talk like religion or news (I'm definitely not saying the OT forum is a serious place ).
I'm just saying I favour the sub-forums OT's (EMB :cloud9:) rather than the OT forum.

I hope somebody has brought up Doctor Who by now. But I'll leave "the Doctor" to someone else, though. I believe that Dr. Emmett L. Brown shall be mine for the keeping. GREAT SCOTT! And I shall name one of my pets Delorean. At least in my head I shall.

Nice, why not just go and spend the money for the game on actual real world hookers then, rather than pursue a gaming habit, stick to real life? Because stabbing people in real life is still mostly illegal..... well, it all depends on how much they'd amp up the graphics for those characters =D

If I didn't buy a Spartan costume the day after Halloween last year ($10 for helm, chestplate, shinguards, shield, and armguards sounds like a sweet deal to me) I would SO go as a witch doctor. That vomiting leaves sounds painful though.
It shouldn't be too hard to set up, attach an old vacuum cleaner of some description to your back (to aid in the hunched look). Fill the bag with leaves and turn on reverse (with the nozzle pointing forward). It could be difficult to make it look realistic, but I think it can be done.
I would so dress as one ... if we had halloween here.

Would you be hardcore enough to drill a hole in the back of your head to put the tube through to get the realistic "vomiting leaves"? *pulls out chisel and hammer*
Yeah *if haloween was celebrate here* however it is not recognised, so I won't. For those that are less hardcore then me you could just rig the nozzle up to the masks mouth, so the mask vomits leaves
Edit: Or better still take up smoking a million packs a day so that you develop throat cancer, then attach the nozzle to the hole in your throat so you can blow the leaves out your mouth.
Edit 2: I do not condone smoking for any reason, however I think Edit1 is as good a reason as any :)

Yes. They are marvellous examples of crpgs. Great choices and consequences, good quests and marvellous humor. Turn-based combat makes it all more enjoyable in my opinion, but some people hate it. Fallout 2 is more about the gags than Fallout 1 is. Play them in order.

I thought the exact same thing when I saw the trailer. I do really wish he'd taken the three minutes it would have taken him to actually talk to someone and show some of the dialog. Just one unimportant dialog with an unimportant person. Just to get a feel for the quality of the writing. Hell, even some screenshots with this would be preferable to what is available now.

At first the Devs really tried to avoid that term saying that is wasn't like that. Nowadays they use it to fuel the hype machine. It has been called Oblivion 2 on more than one occasion.
Still that doesn't bother me as long as the writing is good and the quests are interesting. But we don't get information on that. It is something that really worries me.
Also the quest compass from Oblivion is back. I hated that thing with passion. You couldn't disable it since the quests weren't written to give you enough info without the bloody thing.

I played Stalker a bit, though i must say, that my expectations form the screenshots i saw was not satisfied. The mechanics in the game and the playstyle and feel are very nice, also the reactions of the AI were alot different everytime i reloaded to try a different approach. I did not progress any further past the first bigger skirmish with a couple of AI based on a small farm though, due to not having time to play :p

Considering that I do not really have any expectations, would you recommend that I try it? I know that you can't know if I'll like it, but I want to know if the game is polished enough to be enjoyable and if the game mechanics are decent enough without getting overly annoying. Basically if the game is decently playable or broken beyond repair. Considering the state of gaming these days I'm happy if I don't have to add about 3 gigs of mods to make games enjoyable.

That is certainly, um, interesting, though I don't see that meshing well with the witch doctor's jungle hoboness.

But just imagine it in the jungle. And instead of a ring you have a cardboard box. And they fight over hooch instead of just a big belt and some cash.

Those name filters tend to be hit or miss. I've seen screens of some really crazy names in WoW.
Attorneys have filed lawsuits against the makers of violent games, alleging the violent content causes real-world violence. I think that violence in video games is inspired by the real world.
What do you think, Data?

They stopped the sale of GTA IV in Thailand after some complete idiot murdered a cabby and claimed that he wanted to act out a scene from the game. When will people learn that the cause was not videogames, but the fact that the guy was a complete nutjob? Some people are just mixed up and anything could set them off.
I wonder if another guy in Thailand would murder a family saying "The Devil made me do it!" if they would Ban the practice of Religion?

Ah see, but religious people have total fanatics. They also have influence. Religion is accepted. Nowadays if I say that I like to play videogames half the people I say it to look at me as if I am retarded. Gamers are sitting ducks and still looked upon as immature simpletons.
If half the people look at you like you're retarded, then we're only 1% away from being accepted!
Yay, Video Games! :D

I think the main issue is that violent computer games and TV make good scapegoats for societies problems. It is much easier to blame computer games than to blame a breakdown in mental health/care.

Just like how people blamed sickness and other maladies on witches and bad spirits, it's easier to fabricate blame rather than research what's causing the problem. A lot of people just listen to what some individuals have to say instead of identifying all of the contributing factors.

As part of our ongoing experiment the management has decided that the EDIT feature will now stay open for longer. I think the plan was indefinitely, but they might have shortened it a bit.

TF2 is a good game. For the rest, I was looking forward to Fallout 3, but that turned out to be not so great. They are working on Deus Ex 3. That might be released before D3. But I welcome any game suggestions myself.

Have you played Fallout 3? I was considering buying a PS3 to play it. I'm such a big fan. In fact, Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics are the only game on my laptop besides D1. I had to leave my D2 when moving for fear that I would load it. Sometimes I get the shakes just thinking about that game......
TF2 looks cool.

Have you played Fallout 3?
I've seen the youtube videos from the pirated version. The game itself is not yet out. To be honest, the game looks nothing like Fallout. It plays nothing like Fallout. They dropped all the choices and consequences and went with a more Bioware-type of RPG. If anything, it is a Fallout-themed modification to Oblivion. I was not that impressed with Oblivion. I might buy the game if it drops in price enough.

I'm wondering what you think now that the game is out, if you tried it?
I'm a long time fan of the Fallout series, in fact Fallout 2 is my all times favourite game. I have been waiting for Fallout 3 for more years than I can bother to count and I have to say, that this game met all of my expectations. The fallout atmosphere is all there, the grittyness, the humour and all other post nuclear goodness. Bethesda knew exactly what was great in the Fallout franchise and exactly what to include in the new game. I simply love it and I praise Bethesda as geniouses for their effort on the game.

I tried the game and was unimpressed. I have to give them credit for capturing more Fallout elements than I first anticipated, but overall it is not enough. There are too many faults for it to be a good Fallout game. Even if you look at it as just a game I find it lacking. The animation is unimpressive, choices are superficial, consequences immediate and predictable (if existent) and the combat feels clunky.
