View Full Version : DIII and the New Battlenet System
With DIII on the horizon Blizzard had mention they are going to change, and create a new Battlenet system. If that is the case will we have to create new Battlenet accounts for the new system and DIII or will we be able to use our current accounts?

New account, period. Personally I'll play< only Single Player mode.
New accounts hey, well I just hope I can keep my D2 account name before any D3'ers take it.

I am hearing some rumors out in the mix that they might start charging for bnet service?
Thoughts?

I don't like the idea of Pay 2 Play and never have. BUT I would be willing to pay if in return we receive some wonderful benefits. If Blizzard is giving Diablo 3 continual support, staying ahead of duping/hacking, releasing new content to expand the world, and so on I suppose I can handle paying.

I agree with you 100%..
Also, evidently battle.net is supposed to be more in the foreground than in the background of the game, whatever that means, but it sounds like it could be cool.
And one of the things they've been talking about a lot for both D3 and SC2 is a improved matchmaking system which I'm sure would be much appreciated.

As long as they deliver something of quality I am very happy to pay for it.
For example. The most disappointing title in years "Hellgate:London" had this little nugget of a marketing twist, where you could only play a HC character as a subscriber. Now, that is a complete rip-off and made me actually stop playing the game, that is how much it put me off.
Let's hope, Blizzard does not introduce something like "subscriber-only-set-items" !
But hey, if paying for BN keeps out all the cheats, im up for it

They have changed that now, you only need a level 20 character to unlock hardcore mode, subscriber or not.

I think it could include MMO type stuff. EG i believe they have said the new system could/would support things like guilds, so you may have a guild channel you can type to even when your in game, in game friends lists etc.

Those rumors are about a part of the service that requires a fee. The tournament part. Normal play over the new battlenet service will still be completely free.
And this rumor was never in any way confirmed by a Blizzard representative. Once it was said that they were thinking about it, that doens't mean it will happen.
We will see how it goes with StarCraft2.

I agree, I never have liked the idea of Pay-To-Play, especially when you have to pay for the game then pay a monthly service charge. If Blizzard does start charging for B-Net services, then I would hope they would give Diablo III players the same respect as the WOW players and constantly moderate and update. It would be nice to play DIII without having to worry about Lag, dupes, and other cheaters.
I think pay to play is attractive to a lot of D2 players (though equally unattractive to some) because of the rife corruption of the system with dupes / hacked items / hacks / bots.
If a closed system could even alleviate some of that I personally would be fine with paying for it.
I believe exploits and bugs should be fixed free-of-charge (just about like every other product). The idea that we have to pay for Blizzard's bad design is simply ludicrous.
If there is new content I can understand there is a fee.

I predict that the new Battlenet system will be something very similar to Valve's Steam and will include:
Digital download of games
Integrated community features like chat etc. that will be accessible in-game.
Matchmaking. Advanced create/join/search game feature.
Clan/Guild administration.
Item auction/trade feature. Find buyer/seller and securely trade items without starting a game. Will also include ability to move items between characters without starting a game. Integrates with Clan/Guild administration features to allow for sharing of items.
Dressing room. Dress up your barbie...er.. Diablo 3 character in his fanciest evening wear to impress Battlenet noobs.

Well you have to remember, people will be actively looking for exploits as the game progresses. Making an exploit free game that has this promise forever isnt even close to feesable without some type of recurring license or monthly fee.
Exploits and bugs are an inevitability, not bad design. When people are able to exploit the bugs is unforseeable in general and to counter it you have to active work on the security of your software. That's just the reality of the software business. I cant think of a single program that has ever been "uncrackable" though they've done a good job with WoW.
Additionally, Bot's can be next to impossible to stop and completely unforeseeable. if you don't have people actively looking for ways to thwart bots then you will have a game overrun by them.
Though I would love to see extra content if it was a standard mmo monthly fee (10 to 15) I wouldn't expect as much for $5.

Sounds awesome and I bet/hope you're right. I hope it's more visual than a simple chat channel.

Yep, WoW is pay to play and you can still run bots. Blizzard has taken the creator of the bot software to court (since you have to pay for the bot software, crazyness, pay for a game, pay to play it, then pay for software that will play it for you!) but bots have been around for years.
If they can kill trading, dupes and hacks I pay.
otherwaise it's already pay to play.

That does not relieve them from the responsibility to deliver a good quality product. The idea that developers should be rewarded for making mistakes is simply strange.

Again, that does not relieve them from the responsibility to fix it for free. Of course, on large scale products mistakes are going to be made. But just as when you buy a PC or TV that doesn't work completely as promised I expect such things to be fixed (or replaced in the case of hardware) for free.

I don't see why I need to pay Blizzard for stopping bots if such a task is impossible to begin with.

So WoW is just there to finance Blizzard's lawyers... :whistling:
