...but I find the Witch Doctor to be pretty creepy. He's got a mean look on his face as if he knows a lot of ways to torture and/or kill anything that crosses his path. He's hunched over, decked out in bones and skulls and feathers from god knows what kind of animals and he can spew flesh-eating locusts that devour demons in seconds.

Considering in real life Witchdoctors actually do the work of Demons, it makes zero sense to have a witchdoctor as a character battling demons in Diablo3. At least the necromancer had control of the underworld, whereas the Witchdoctor is just a pawn in the real world.

The witchdoc is not replacing the necromancer, it has already been said by a blizzard employee

Thank Trag'Oul for that!

I was looking at the classes page, on the D3 site. When you click him, and he walks up, it almost looks like he has Parkinsons's Disease, or some kind of mental instability trying to escape.

Creepy, indeed. And cool..

by saying there are Real Life WD's serving demons, you imply there are real demons, then go on to say a game makes zero sense.... *pff*

Yeah here is the link too the interview I read.

"The witch doctor, on the other hand, seems to be more of a caster with a pet-control ability. Jay Wilson, a lead designer on Diablo III, said the witch doctor is not a replacement for Diablo II's necromancer."

Really? Folklore holds that witch doctors in England in the late nineteenth century actually exorcised evil spirits, and in southern Africa (in Zulu communities for example) they are traditionally healers and counselors that aid ailing mind, bodies, souls, and even communities.

Eh, he isn't old and pasty and doesn't have a mullet; that's enough for me.

This sentence doesn't make much sense.
In fact it sounds bias and one-sided.

I recommend you to read the history of the WD in D3 site rather than posting warped silly definitions of the WD which I presume are your own deluded assumptions.
Stop making a fool of yourself.

I dont think its like he has Parkinsons but I like the track you're on when you say that he has some kind of mental instability trying to escape. It's a lot like the power that he harnesses is so powerful he trembles trying to control himself.

Kinda like when you're so drunk you're struggling not to drool, but in a kind of a different light :P

yeah It's just too bad he has Parkinson's. I think they need to redo that animation, what were they thinking?

Ever watch those shows about tribalistic rituals and such? There's a lot of jerky, almost twitchy motions in those, and the people almost look like they're in a trance. I think that's what they were going for with the WD.

Except he's not doing rituals, he's just standing there.

He could be possesed, or receiving a spirit. Whatever it certainly adds to the character, I think he is great on blizzard's page. I prefer him that way than with all those feathers in the gameplay video.

Actually, Streetshark you couldnt be more wrong. Witch Doctors were just another name for African shaman or "medicine men". They were known not only for their ability to communicate with the spirits of the dead, but for the ability to cure evils inflicted by the devil.

Perhaps I'm being overly critical - I also think the barb looks a little on the pudgy side. Kinda of like Mr Incredible before he started working out again.

Muscle guys always pudge out when they start getting old and out of practice. This is twenty years later, mind you.

He has a 6-pack, I don't consider that pudgy in the least. It's not the most defined ab muscles I've ever seen, but he looks more buff than he did 20 years ago.

kinda off topic, but speaking of aged muscle guys, have you seen arnold (ok, im going to try to spell this) schwarzinigar with out a shirt lately? its scary, scare you for life type of thing.

I think he might be wearing a skin-coloured shirt with a 6 pack painted on it. Also why run around in a loin cloth?

Reminds me of Ric Flair (if anyone ever watched "professional" wrestling).

The Witch Doctor is very enticing, in the mystical medicine man kind-of way, and I pretty much agree with the OP.

I have no negative feelings about the Witch doctor really. His role of using Zombies fits since in Haiti (I think) there were incidents of witch doctors manipulating people using puffer fish poison and forcing them to do work (which are considered slave zombeis).

In Boma Congo the tribes used the Nkisi Nkonde, a nail figurine to communicate with the dead. Not really in an evil sense, but for people to communicate with their dead loved ones. Witch Doctors used these Nail figurines for evil, communicating with demons. Perhaps this could be an item for the Witch Doctor class :)

I really like the Witch Doctor. He's something new, and he fills our need for a terrifying protaganist character to take on the forces of hell.

Keep in mind that before D2, the Necromancer was anything but generic. Blizzard took a risk in creating him. Now he's a staple of every RPG game imagineable.

If Blizzard makes a successful sequel that builds on the successes of the previous games, I have no doubt that the Witch Doctor will become a much more common fantasy archetype.
