I really hope the Necromancer and his Golem's make a re-appearance has he was most unique (and coolest) character in Diablo 2. His Golems where the best pets in the game and I wished you could have a wider variety and utilise different types depending on the situation.

Basic Golems
Clay Golem - good resistance to magic and elemental attacks (a walking shield!).
Blood Golem - high poison damage and a conduit to boost curses (effect and power)

Earth Golems (Mid level)
Stone Golem - created from a rune stone using its attributes, can absorb additional stones (upto a limit) to boost attributes, once killed or de-cast the runes can be retrieved.
Crystal Golem - created from gems using its attributes, can absorb different gems and grades to boost attributes.
Iron Golem - created from weapons or armour using its attributes.

Elemental Golems (High level)
Tempest Golem - has lightning attacks and thunder stuns.
Ice Golem - has ice attacks and cold stuns.
Fire Golem - has fire attacks and sets enemies alight.

Each golem class would each be one skill option, ie Basic Golems, Earth Golems and Elemental Golems and you could have a maximum of 3 Golems at once with a maximum of 2 different golems from each class. The earth Golems would be persistant while the other golems would need to be re-casted like in Diablo 2. Golems abilities/attributes would rank from both additional skill points and the necro levelling up.

I hate to break it to you but with the witch doctor it will be extremely unlikely that the necromancer makes a return...

you don't need a necro to make golems.....any class could still have them.
It would actually make the most sense that the pure caster type character would have golems, and maybe with your elemental golem idea they could recieve synergies from other skills?
In any case, i'm sure they'll be back in one way or another.

You could extend that idea further by having a Clay Golem assume the properties of the area it was created in: Ice Golems from Mt. Arreat, Sand Golems from Lut Gholein.

Blood Golems could be based on corpses, assuming some of the creature's characteristics (speed, damage, etc).

Seems like the Elemental Golems would be based on the elemental gems.

Overall, item-based golems would be a cool system, and a great way to have a unique summons.

This is ridiculous.

As highlighted by someone, necros are "masters of the undead".

Golems are not even related to necromancer, they should be summoned by a specialist in the elemental department.
My idea would be :

Incorporate elemental golems into sorceress/sorcerer classes, or something closely related to a druid.

I would actually like to see the 5th class be either a necro or sorc that is customized for melee combat.

For the necro I imagine him summoning buffs for himself. Like a thorns type of armor where he summons bone spikes onto himself. Or an armor summon that would completely cover him in a werebear sized skeleton armor. He could also buff his weapons with bone enhancements and keep cursing skills to aid him. I'd also imagine he'd have some skills that provide life and mana leeching off of corpses.

For the sorc I imagine them being able to buff their weapons with all sorts of elemental enhancements. They'd have nova type spells for attacking multiple enemies. Elemental armors like the chilling armor but for all the elements. For instance lightning armor could be like a speed increase that gives you FAR, FRW and the speed to avoid some attacks.

I think they would make for both interesting classes and they'd give Blizzard some fun areas to provide lore about how they evolved out of the necro or sorc characters we already knew.

I doubt there shall be a nec cuz of the witch doctor. Iirc someone at blizz said they like the chars not to have similar skills and imo wd has both poison&bone-ish skills and pets, so therefor i'll doubt they'll add nec sinc it prolly will be too similar to wd

That's exactly why I think they could add one with a new spin on the character. We had people create melee mancer builds in D2. Now they could include a class that is intended to be used that way. The skills would be mostly new and different from the witch doctor. Maybe without any summons at all or just the ability to summon one golem with a golem tree like OP suggests.
