View Full Version : Boss one hit kill???
Could this be a good reason to stay off using melee class from having the head chop off, i think it will suck if is true, you really die like that when you had full time.

Is that English?
If you mean the OHKO in the gameplay video, then the boss ripped half of the barbarians torso, not only the head^^

It is a death animation. The character had just 0 HP so the enemy ripped him in half. ;)

As long as it works like this I think it's a good idea. Each major 'boss' could have its own series of death animations.
well d2 had such a feature... oh, you mean on purpose?

I think it's kinda cool. My most fun battles have been when Diablo is a bit too much and we have to take turns distracting him and damaging him lest we be frozen and/or killed to death by some form of redish colored kill attack.

i WOULD love it... its more realistic.. and makes ot more dangerous and skillfull to complete :D
Of course it's not a one hit kill. Nobody would want to fight him.
It would be a great end to a hardcore characters life. :evil2: Only on HC though.
The higher the difficulty, the gorier the death?
Yes, my head wad going there as I wrote the above post. A HC character dies in hell mode and the end boss (Diablo?) rips off his head. But only HC and only hell mode. That would be so cool. Nothing like surviving forever and all the way up to the end just to have your head ripped by big D at the last moment.
Yes, I'll kill you in one hit
Awwww this thread isn't about poison javelining baal in one hit?
Bah I don't mind death animations when a character is killed, but I don't want special instadeath attacks that you have to avoid no matter how much health you have.
No, there had better not a boss that can one hit kill any character at full health. That would be somewhat unbalancing and no one would ever want to run that boss. No one would even want to get close to that boss.

If it was a slow enough attack, I think it would add much more strategy to the game. Of course, if it were an auto-hit or in a place like Tal Rasha's Chamber, it would be WAY too strong.

Bosses should be able to grab your merc and beat you to death with him/her!
I wonder how you'll be able to retrieve your corpse in this case, though. Or if you just have to get back to whatever's left of your character to get your stuff back.
Maybe you'll have to pick up the pieces and sort through it to get all your stuff back...
ewww...that's a bit strong. Sorry.

I think it's a lot more realistic than the demon running around after you like a couple of mice. If I was that demon I wouldn't waste time chasing people about, I'd simply grab them and bite half their torso off! Job done :)
Actually I hope that there will be a way to fight the monster from his hand so you can escape if you're persistent enough or die if you just can't fight.

I personally hope that they will remove the ability to open town portals when fending Unique monsters and especially Bosses.
Its a tad ridiculous that we can open portals to heal and buy potions when fighting the Prime and Lesser Evils in Diablo 2. Absolutely 0 strategy required.
About the 1 hit-ko issue, we don't even know the contents of the game and you are making assumptions already.
How do you know the monster will just 1 hit-ko regardless of your level,hp,class etc etc?

Frankly I totally believe that the whole video area was especially made up for the cinematic trailer - emphasis on the "cinematic". Do you honestly believe that the exact same area is going to be in the game, in the same way? No, it was especially setup for the trailer. Other examples? Areas designed explicitly to show various monsters to fit the commentary. They even say that they rigged the chest to give all the armour bits. The chunk of bridge knocked out...unless you tell me that EVERY class has a leap-like ability then that's not going to be there like that. Not to mention the incredible deviation of difficulty in many parts of the cinematic.
Basically? That whole "one hit ko" bit was just there for eye-candy. Having that in a game like this would be stupid - for you character anyway...minions/henchies? Maybe :)
The question was raised about "what if" bosses could one hit kill some characters. We're discussing what the game would be like if this were the case. No one is making assumptions and no one is saying this is how the game will be released. No one even said that the boss or his lair would look the same.

In the fight with the Siegebreaker Assault Beast, it picks up the female WD, practically screams at it (presumably squeezing her to death), then throws her to the ground. Just before that, you can see her running around. If she was at 0 hp she would most likely not be doing that. The male Barbarian is in mid-swing when the beast grabs him. All this points to the possibility of one-hit kills being implemented, and I personally believe it, along with the lack of dependence of potions and other stuff yet revealed, will provide a much more strategic think-on-your-feet game than the previous Diablo games.
@pantherus: Your first paragraph is correct for the most part. Of course it's not gonna appear the exact same way without luck since the areas and certain events are randomly generated, and of course the gameplay video was 'fixed' for the most part. Would you want to showcase something you didn't have pretty good control over?
I'm abit torn on this subject, mainly because I've seen it work and in my opinion work not. In an RTS game like Dawn of War it simply shines, but thats because imo that you control a little army. A death animation doesn't bring everything to a halt it fits right into the heat of battle.
But in a game where you only control one char, it is still, however good looking, taking you out of the heat of action. If the mob is invulnerable while doing a fatality or animation, the rest of the party needs to stand there and wait or blaze away for nothing. Which is immersive breaking for me to know! It ends up breaking the heat of battle rather than contributing to it. My concerns are after playing Age of Conan, fatalities happen often, and you see your char go through these animated motions again and again, and you sit there and watch.
After a while they become more of a nuisance than added flavor, somewhat like commercial breaks in a good movie. They overrule the intense of the battle. I don't fear this for DIII though, but at the end of the day, if you only control that one char, it's like a little cutscene where you after a while might get tired of cutscenes when it's most actionpacked.
So it can be overdone or misplaced for sure is my opinion. AoC did.
