There have been a few requests and comments about this issue, so we figured we'd finally make a forum for those who are interested.

I've been playing some myself, the past couple of weeks. I went on a D1 kick last year, in the weeks before the hgl beta began, and found it amusing for a bit. You've got to pace yourself; there's no running and you can't take on multiple monsters at once (in most situations) and it's dangerous; any 2 or 3 individual monsters can kill you if they get the first hit in.

I'm playing hellfire, since it made a lot of improvements to the basic game. Those don't much include the 2 new dungeons, since they pretty much suck (the tile sets and the monsters in them), but fast walk in town, more items for sale, oils, a few more interesting shrines, instant access to all dungeons on hell difficulty SP, etc.

the thing that seems less fun long term is the lack of magic find, and that item types don't scale up. There aren't any excep or elite items, and while you can sort of do boss runs; heading straight down to Lazarus and then gorash on 16, you're as likely to find a dagger or short sword from them as a bastard sword or full plate mail. the modifiers do scale up, at least, so you don't get useless low level mods on the useless low level items you find from high level bosses.

The funny part was me struggling last week to make a new sorcerer, and remember how to play him properly. It's funny since I wrote a huge d1 sorcerer strategy/play guide years ago. Meant to do one for rogues too, since I played them more, but never quite got around to it, and I've lost the tricks of the trade now.

And yes, I'm rambling. Enough for now.

When I dug out my D2 and LoD CDs for a nice reinstall (and subsequent horrible addiction), I noticed my old Diablo CD as well... so tempting, but I know I'll be disappointed in the long run, so I'll just let nostalgia take care of my D1 needs.

Me and a friend plan to play thru Diablo 1 and then 2 a week or so before D3 comes out. We have preordered it already so when it comes we will be thrilled and in the right diablo mood.
Saw some videos on youtube of people playing Diablo and it still looks great.

If i can find my D1 CD again, i'll have to play through it once more. Of course, i'll mod it to make the creatures twice as hard, since that always makes it a truly hellish experience

Heh..yeah I've dusted off DI..and I'd been meaning to try more DII again lately..geeze I miss the old gang..but..oh well. Well the announcement gave me more of an urge to D2..and I did play some D1 as well...need to do more D1 actually...

I actually played through it again not long ago and it was very difficult. It was balanced somewhat with the save-anywhere system, but the monsters were still tough to kill. I found myself retreating to a corner in Hell (the place, not the difficulty - this was on normal) so that only three enemies could be attacking me at any time. I never even attempted nightmare and hell difficulties.

Diablo II has some awesome features, but in my opinion you can't beat the music, enemies and atmosphere of the original.

A few days after the Diablo III announcement I broke out the CD, and from then I've slowly been making my way down into the dungeon. Currently I'm on the final level (in normal), but the regular monsters are beating me up, so it's slow going. Apparently the game thought I was a warrior, not a rogue, as can be seen by the uniques I've found! >_<

(though does not work for Hellfire installs, grab The Dark by Zamal and Zenda for your Hellfire needs)

When I heard about D3 just a few weeks ago I got the urge to install D1 & Hellfire. Naturally I put on the extra character, multiplay, and additional quest patches. And even though I just burned a few extra copies of D1 & Hellfire as my originals were getting scratchy, I made sure I also installed the No-CD hacks. It is so nice not to have to wait for the CD to spin and the quick load time is great.

I've also been searching the net for all the D1 & Hellfire information I can get my hands on. A lot of the old sites are gone but I've found a few gems here and there. I was really interested in seeing some more modding going on for these golden oldy games. I think I'll try that extended stash hack it might be fun. It took me a little while to remember just how the Cornerstone of the World worked. I did notice a little cheat about the COW though. Leave your character that is dropping an item in the room. Load up your character that wants to pick up the item, get it, leave and save. Now load up that initial character who dropped the item and it should still be there. I hate cheating though but I did find that interesting.

This forum was a great idea. Looks like it's attracted a few new members, too...myself included.

I didn't pick Diablo 1 back up because I never really stopped playing it. I just finished a run through with a Rogue a few weeks ago.

Diablo II is an excellent game, especially after the LoD improvements, and in many ways is superior to Diablo. But Diablo is superior in just as many ways in my eyes. The atmosphere, as mentioned, was thicker. The music set a great mood. And a lot of the feel of the game was just...better as far as I'm concerned. I liked the old projectile system (easy mode for Rogues, stand behind a grate and let loose!). I liked a lot of the older sound effects. The old automap (arrow instead of cross...thingy). I came to like a lot of the quirks, too, like perpetually having piles of gold and rare items strewn on the ground surrounding the Tristram side of the Town Portal.

I still play both games regularly, and it's hard to say which one I like "more." Diablo certainly has a special value as it was one of the first PC games I ever owned. But DII occupied FAR too much of my late night should-be-sleeping time on Open battle.net, too. I'll just keep enjoying them both I guess.

I just wish I could find my Hellfire disc...I have the box, but the disc has escaped. I need more dungeon!

My favourite mod for Hellfire is probably V&K (Varyah & Khan) (Spelling?) for Diablo: Hellfire. Awsome mod in all the right ways. New monsters, balanced, more features and a bit harder (alot!). I currentply plau with a friend on the internet (Yep it's possible if you toy arround with applications) and we're about to head down in Caves soon, exciting times indeed!

So if anyone is interested in how to play Hellfire with friends over the Net, just post here and I'll guide you thru it.

You really should move on to The Dark, Zamal and Zenda got permission to continue on V&Ks work on their Hellfire mod when they stopped to do the ME mod for regular Diablo, and it has come a long way.

Perhaps I should indeed check it out later today or tomorrow if I got the time to do so, got a vacation comming up so I might decide to save it for when I get back home instead. If I remember correctly I tried it back in the days and I was somewhat not pleased with what I saw and went back to V&K but if it's a continuation of V&K I atleast have to check it out since V&K is probably the best none game supported mod I've ever seen so far.

"I sense a soul in search of answers." "What ails you my friend?" :banghead:

How many times did we hear those while playing D1!

When I ventured back into D1 a while ago, I found the lack of a Skill Tree to be quite strange. I recall how exciting it was to get the Book of a Spell, so that you always knew it.

What about being able to save your game at ANY POINT! :propeller: I remember how indignant I was when I realized in D2 that you had to keep playing until you found a waypoint and that you couldn't save RIGHT before a big battle.

I played the V&K d1 and HF mods many times. One of the first features I did on dii.net, when I was still just loosely associated with Elly's early website enterprise, was to interview those guys about how they did the modding and what their motivations and inspirations were. I hope to dig up and repost some more of those old features over time; we had some really cool stuff from 1998-2004; all those e3 trips, bliz north visits, interviews, chats, etc.

As for the mods, I will check out the dark once I get tired of vanilla HF. The crypt levels were actually fun in the V&K version; as a "harder than diablo's hell" extra area. they ditched the stupid hive entirely, IIRC, and it was not missed.

hey guys.

I've also been playing a bit of diablo 1 the last few weeks.
I just played through with the mage, and i have the following question:

how do i get to nightmare level?

I only have Diablo 1 (not Hellfire); I am a level 25 mage; I killed Diablo and a cutscene appeared, after which it went back to the menu's.

So, I select my mage again, and clicked new game. was that right?
because I went into level 1 dungeon, and the monsters are still the same difficulty as normal. :coffee:

If you are playing single player, you need to create a multiplayer character (use direct connect) and you need to enter nightmare difficulty, then quit out and go back to single player. There is a bug that makes SP take on whatever difficulty the last multiplayer game was.

If your playing multiplayer, just select Nightmare difficulty :D

Yeah, I was pretty surprised that the project was still going on. It is up to version 5.3 already (compared to my old version 4.1).

The Dark v5.3 (http://www.thedark5.com/)

I definitely need to boot this one up. They even have an online guide with pictures of all the critters.

I installed D1 like a weak after the D3 announcement. I love the atmosphere. I find it much harder than D2. If it wasn't for that save feature it would be crazy. The music rocks and I completely forgot about the invisible monsters that show themselves at the most terrible times.

Once I'm done I figure I'll play through D2 and LoD again.

Hamachi is the only way, it works essentially as a go-between. Since Diablo only allows for IPX games, Hamachi tricks the program into thinking each player is part of the same network, thus letting IPX work normally, even though it is all really just TCP/IP.

:omg: There is a Nightmare difficulty in D1! I played it years ago when it was first released and eventually killed Diablo on Level 16 (I think) and assumed that was the end of the game! So there is Nightmare and Hell difficulty in D1! :jig:

Erm...i know, but you cant access a difficulty selection menu for single player, hence you have to use the work around i stated in my post.

I love the atmosphere. <snip> The music rocks
My biggest disapointments with D2 by far, is that almost all of the music was lame (only Tritram reprise and Valley of the Kings were good) and none of the atmosphere was really retained at all.

hey guys, quick Q, since we're talking about D1 mods... can any of these be applied to the PSX version? :)

moiselvus
20-07-2008, 21:49
I suppose not, you'd need to change the files on your cd, meaning burning a new one (and correct me if i'm wrong, but PSX can' t read burned cd's?) and the game worrksdiffrently i suppose (no need to install etc.) so i guess you'd need special designed mods... a (really) quick google didn' t give me anything either...

See, if it's built exactly the same way with some extra PSX code, it'd prolly workish.
And it's not for in a PS1, it would be for PSP, using POPS, which is a flawless PSX emu. S'yeah. I can also mount and edit the ISO - That's not a problem. Anyone have any info/experience?

Heh, i also got the urge to play through D1 again! I recently started a Warrior. I play without Hellfire and i play SP in MP (weird huh?) over Direct Cable Connection so i can re-run areas.

When you die in MP you drop all your items on the ground and need to get them back or you loose them!
In SP you save instead and can just load and continue without any penalty. MP also got tougher monsters.

You can't have an infinite amount of items laying on the ground in MP, when you Quit the game and start a new one everything on the ground will vanish!

editing the ISO and editing the game will be probably very hard.. it's not that you just switch the executable.. I dont even know the ps format
there is a very small chance that switching the data files could work, but I dont think so.. I'd say you wont do it, if you do now know nothing about PS programming..

Lanthanide
23-07-2008, 11:42
The 'data files' in the case of D1 mods is the diablo.exe file itself, which is compiled to run on x86 PC hardware. Probably the monster and item tables (the main things that mods change) will be in the same sort of format, but I doubt they'd be in the same area of the file, and definitely all the actual executable stuff (like memory management, graphics system, sound system, etc) will be different for the playstation version.

So basically you're not going to realistically convert any PC mods to PS mods, at least not without huge amounts of transcribing work. If you've got access to the internet from a computer, then it is highly likely that computer will be able to run Diablo, so you'd be better off just buying a copy and playing the mods that way.
