Can you do that now? Is it still supported? Or do we need to play over tcp/ip? Is there a irc site or some place I could hook up and play the game multiplayer?

Also, I'm looking for a mod that:
1) Allows running
2) gives me the alt highlight option :)

Stash is nice, but I don't need it for nostalgia. Maybe the walking wouldn't be so bad for multiplayer, either.

Just let me know if people are still playing this on multiplayer?

If your patched up to 1.09 (i think that is still latest) you can play over battle.net just fine.

IIRC nobody has ported running from Hellfire back to regular Diablo.

The alt highlight option i believe is in The Dark mod for hellfire, though i dont think its on the alt key and you cant play HF over battle.net

The middle earth mod for 1.07 has the functionality, though you have to hold the mouse in the top left corner of the screen to highlight everything.

You can play over the net but as far as I know you can't play Hellfire on Battle.Net but you can get arround it to play with friends anyway.

1: Get Hamachi (preferably an earlier version of it I use: 1.0.1.1 since later versions seems to mess things up now and then).
2: Once it's installed the rest is pretty easy to figure out, but to be 100% sure for it to work you have to disable IPX Network on all Network adapters except on the added one for Hamachi otherwise it simply wont work.
3: Once you've made sure Hamachi is the only one having a IPX Protocol activated, create a "Network" on Hamachi and tell your friends to join it thru Hamachi. Once all in there we're ready for step 4.
4: One person creates a game on IPX Network, all you others should see the game up and running now if you've configured Hamachi and made sure Hamachi only has IPX activated and no other Network adapters.

Did I get this right: you can play the original diablo just fine, but not hellfire? Well, I wasn't too happy about the expansion pack ever, so it's not a big deal.

I'm not sure if I want all those stuff from mods, just those two functionalities would be great. But if it disables me to play in the battle.net.. Too bad.

See you all online!!

Correct, Battle.Net does not have support for Hellfire which is quite sad :(

Hellfire over Hamachi is the only way to play it online that i know off, that will at least get you running while your in town.

Item highlighting is simply not something you can have unless you mod the game.

I just played a couple of hours on battle.net and I was positively surprised!

- There was over 180 players playing over 100 games.
- I was able to twice in a four player party with different people
- People were using complete sentences, resurrecting each other, giving money and helping out, no duping or cheating, no grabbing death loot etc

I'm now at the end of catacombs and I'm getting excited :) Hope to see more mature players online!! :)

Also notice that you can't play Hellfire multiplayer on 64-bit Vista as there are no 64-bit drivers for the IPX protocol (used by original Diablo and Hellfire for network connections)

IIRC the Novell Netware package for Vista gives you the option to install the IPX/SPX protocol stack. I personally have not tried it, but if you are keen, you can download it here (http://download.novell.com/Download?buildid=8a0K3ER8Md0~)
