Please help error after install

Hi my first post i am a lifelong diablo fan recently i decided to reinstall d2 which i have not played for a few years to be honest the news that d3 is under development has got me into d2 again, anyway game installed without any issues but when i try to run the game up i get this message.

Unhandled Exception
acess_violation (c0000005)

Disc looks fine i got a replacement so no scratches strange error as installs
without issue, high end pc so that wont be a problem i just wanted to play classic d2 and not Lod also any advice on running it on a flatscreen monitor
can i play in windowed mode.
