I see the similarity, but in the D3 art, the "lava" is acid green. Also, the head-door appears to be part of the architecture under the Tristram monastery.

Its more of the human shaped container that is in the durance of hate and what these things are growing in, the size is indeed similar. What, you expect every grown-in-a-tub monster to look the same? I think mephisto could have grown something in it with all the corpses around...
