Here is a suggestion for the secret level.
Instead of the usual heading off on a head bashing trip, the secret level could have you in an area that is in a precarious position, (siege like), with wave upon wave of monsters attacking.
You have to defend the area long enough for your bonus item to be crafted, otherwise the area must be abandoned and your item never gets completed:scratchchin:
