View Full Version : 'Mistress of Pain'? - Winner of Blizzcon Costume Contest
Go to the D3 site and look at the artwork.
Look at pictures 52 and 39.
Holy ****, is all I can say.
Who is this new demon? Judging from her arachnid visage and the "pain" theme, I'm guessing that she's related to Duriel in some way. His hellish consort, perhaps?
Details from picture 52 reveal that she will almost certainly be a boss. These include that she will have a frontal attack from her front legs, spinarettes that secrete a silk that will slow heroes down, an explosive projective that clouds around heroes, and a possible weak spot: her abdomen.
To those of you who have actually read the Diablo books, is this an actual character? If so, who is she?

Duriel was my favourite boss in D2 (his look, not his tendency to drop scrolls of town portal). This one is also a "bug". I'm really interested in the story behind her.
A spider and a beetle mating. Hmm. Kinky.
I love how the female demons in the Diablo universe are simultaneously grotesque and highly sexualized. It reminds me a lot of Clive Barker's work.

Look at the date on 52. 2003. I guess D3 really has been in development all that time... huh? Heh.
Also, look at the old concept shots of Duriel and Meph. This boss may have a completely new look by the time we get to see her, but it does look quite fleshed out as of right now.

i think she looks like the coolest monster ever in any video game. that might be a stretch for most of you but seriously love the look of her. i am gonna run her over and over killing her for no reason, even if i never get a single drop. see thats how you show your love, by killing them and endless amount of times

My lead points to the book Scales of the Serpent. From the Wikipedia article (and the text appears elsewhere):
After destroying the Temple and converting much of the cities populace to his cause, Lilith makes her presence known to Uldyssian, who leaves to confront her. He defeats the demon Gulag at this point by tearing him in two. Astroga (the spider demon) also seeks to attack Uldyssian here, but Lilith sends him away and seals her confrontation with Uldyssian from his sight.
I've only now realised that the implication of this text is that Astroga is male. Which wouldn't really work with a mistress of pain...

May this be an art rework of Lilith? (instead of reusing the andariel model)
From what I've heard, the Worldstone had two purposes, one was hiding sanctuary from heaven and hell, the other was to weaken the Nephilim. The Nephilim being a cross between angel and demon (Inarius and Lilith) "and stronger than both".
Lilith wanted to use the Nephilim as an army, but was banished into the abyss by Inarius.
Might be worth mentioning, the Nephilim are probably human if I understtod it correctly.
Now, with the worldstone gone, maybe Lilith has some new plans for her children? And this time Inarius should not be able to stop her...

In the books Lilith is described to look just like Andy but green and scaley, I assume that's where the concept for Andy's appearance came from. So it made sense to reuse the model for Lilith but turn her green.

I think this character concept is as creepy as it is awesome. As such, I'm planning to appear at Blizzcon this year, 2009, dressed up as her, and I hope with all my heart I do her justice. ^_~

If you look closely at the pic with the chains the normal front of her is sitting in a chair. I think she's gonna be in a dungeon as a good npc at first, with like curtains hiding her spider legs, and the player is going to have to do quests for her. then at the end of the chain she's gonna pop out and be like BAM WHAT HAPPENED?!?!?!
then ya gotta kill her :)

As for the DiabloWiki entry (you should add the cosplay costume to the gallery there!), Mistress of Pain, I just saw someone edited a typo I had made in the first version. She doesn't spray "Sticky Slick", she sprays "Sticky Silk" :P

I'm still working on finishing those spider legs, it's been a pretty laborious effort to get this costume done, but when I do, I'll get the pictures posted here and maybe even try for the wiki ;)
AtomicJ - Thanks so much ^_^ Yeah, I'm going to do the big reveal during Blizzcon; and not just for the spider legs and abdomen..
In relation to the construction of the costume.. the entire costume is being hand-made by me (no commissions, prel-made portions of the dress nothing like that) The only thing I didn't actually make on my own was the chains I'll be using, which are those plastic ones you can get during halloween :)

Unfortunately, only one view of the outfit, but that style of "evil demoness in a sexy 1800s gown" is fairly common in anime and other such fiction. The spider legs and semi-Mardi Gras style mask are nice touches, though. And they certainly complicate the costume construction!

It was thanks to this photo that I was able to work out some logistical issues with this costume.. Love this character though, she's really intense :)

Astrogha is a spider-demon, yes. Lilith is one that looks like Andariel (she was in D2 as well, you needed to run her to get one of the keys for the ubers).
Incidentally you can fight both of them in the MedianXL mod for Diablo 2. :thumbup:

Fortunately, I did plan for that, and my greatest triumph with this costume is its portability and its ability to be adjusted. In other words, it will literally be as easy as unhooking a few points and re-hooking. :D
or we can take the easy answer and just use Scroll of TP lolz XD
I honestly hope the costume as a whole turns out great, I'm not necessarily worried for the dress, I'm quite proud of the work I've done with that, but the legs have me sweating bullets right now. I'm very quickly running out of time :/

You'd be surprised how many women there actually are online. It's just easier for them to pretend to be guys because people treat them differently if they think there's a girl at the keyboard.

A thousand congratulations, seeing it in person was UNBELIEVABLE! There were some excellent costumes there, and nothing against them, but hands down, the Mistress of Pain was the best by far. The teeth were especially chilling and outstanding.

This costume was sooo insane. I searched for pictures of it on google, but only got this site. It's cool to see pictures of it being made. This costume alone has re-kindled my passion for Diablo. And yea, the character is pretty damn awesome.
