No. Not an Anti-Paladin. I'm talking about Anti Paladin which is the opposite of a holy warrior. He is based on a unholy warrior that has the abillity to use Unholy bolts and darker variants of the original abillities.
I wouldn't call him Evil just becuase he is opposite. Just as the Assassin he would be fighting for money and fame and ignore the fact that the world is doomed.
Pretty much like a Antagonist.
So kind of like a Blackguard? A "Paladin" that worships a darker power? That sounds pretty cool.
But wouldn't he kind of have to be evil? It would be hard to create a Blackguard without calling him evil (although, Necromancers aren't evil, right?).

Necromancers are neutral. They are balanced with the undead and seek to claim order in our worlds. But their reputation makes people think or claim that they are evil.
And since Assassins fight for gold that would allso be evil but they do have a heart and fight for what they believe in.
A hero seeking awesome loot in the fiery pits of Hell that the bad guys happen to be sitting on?
If you want to use the DnD outlook on alignment, I guess you could say the class could be "chaotic neutral". I think that was it anyway....where it's like Robin Hood status. You're causing trouble by stealing but in turn are giving it to the poor. You're not really doing good but not really evil either.
Or perhaps it's more along the lines of using new found dark powers that are abound in the world to combat the very evil that created those powers?
I can kind of see it both ways and perhaps with a combination of that.

Assassins didn't fight for gold. They were part of a secret order which hunted down and killed Mages.
Also known as the Viz-Jaq'taar or the Order of the Mage Slayers, Assassins are an ancient order originally founded by the Vizjerei Clan to hunt down and eliminate rogue magi within their own ranks. Employing secret disciplines to combat and resist the magical abilities of their elusive quarry, the Assassin's bag of tricks includes traps and other infernal devices, martial arts, and powerful mental abilities. Common people know nothing of the Assassins, but they are widely feared and respected by all who employ the magic arts.
I was wondering where someone got the idea Assasins fought for gold.

I like the idea of expanding from the cliche that all the PCs in the game are heroes fighting to rid evil...
How about some people who realise that the minions of Hell would destroy the world, and they rather like the setup they've got there and will fight to keep it like that...

exactly my point.
We need something in the middle that doesn't care about anything but what riches exists in the world.

Money is a poor motivation in an "epic" story. That said, someone purely motivated by money would be alright. Wouldn't make sense to make them "evil" though, imo.
Holy cow...
Nah, I don't think it's very likely that we'll be playing a cow anti paladin.
Although, maybe in the new cow level...

Cows with guns...anyone? :)
Seriously though - the general thought of something other than your classical "hero" is a great idea. The necromancer filled that role well in D2 - maybe they can be a bit more daring in d3?

Unholy Cow? Red within red eyes, large nostril band, cow bell, udders of steel? This sounds exciting!

I think the witch doctor fills that role just as well as the necromancer did, at least from a lorewise point they run on basically the same precedents. One just looks like he's a grandpa that enjoyed the goth scene a little too much, and the other is a skinny black man with a penchant for feathers (aka African tribal).

The steaks were high.... Bad cow pun...
I played the paladin for longer than the rest of the characters combined. That said, a dark knight would be a great way to improve any already awesome class, which has been a staple of the franchise (D1:Warrior D2:Paladin). Now I can only hope and wait for more character announcements...
edit:Saw this in another thread and liked it. Now that mephisto is back in hell, he is not poisoning the minds of the paladins of Zakarum. Perhaps that sect could make a comeback, and being from the East they would being loosely similar to the D2 pallys of Westmarch (in the West...) but could have a different culture, look, abilities, etc.

Check out Glen Cook's "Black Company". Fantastic book.

I always thought Paladins could be pretty anti-themselves, depending how precisely you built them. Things like Sacrifice strike me as really unholy. Cutting the hell out of yourself and spilling your blood all over your feet so you can get some extra damage out of that swing? Ouch. :P

Dear OP,
I think the anti paladin you request is actually the paladin from d2. With all the greedy mfing, trash talking, dueling, and general ganster rap artist behavior, we have a collective bunch of evil retards pretending to be holy men. They already are dark knights and there are no rigid rules or language filters to stop them.
So I guess I agree the next holy man in d3 SHOULD be dark, in anticipation of a pathetic crowd of brat players who will be controlling them. At least their behavior will make sense.

My favorite class in Everquest was the Shadow Knight. As a contrast to Lay on Hands which instantly restored your life to full, Shadow Knights had the Harm Touch ability which would deal a serious amount of damage but could only be used every 24 hours. Shadow Knights are more melee oriented necromancers, in EQ they had Life Tap spells, poison damage spells, damage over time diseases, debuffs etc. All while using a two handed sword / axe and handling impressively in combat. I would love to see a class like this in D3. They would not be as strong as a barbarian, or have the casting power of the necro, but a powerful hybrid of the two.
Come to think of it, the next WoW expansion will have a Dark Knight class or something around this same idea.

why do people assume the warrior from D1 is the equilent of the paladin in d2? surely the barbarian is closer to the warrior then the paladin is
surely the fact that blizzard carried the barbarian on into d3 proves the point.
(and yes i know the barb isnt the warrior as the warrior is/was diablo

This isn't Monty Python. ;)
But yes, I think an Anti anything class would be interesting.
Yeah, a paladin going bad due to his suffering, or just a new unholy warrior would be cool. He could even use the armor design Lord Marshal uses in the Chronicles of Riddick :jig:

(looks pretty dark and intimidating)
He could have a cool transparent skill like he does as well! But using a sword or something, not fists.
