Since it is obvious paladins probably won't make the cut, and that they are trying to do away with the good character/bad character thing. What about a Monk that is balanced and can use magical attacks that are Holy for one skill tree and Unholy for another.

The Monk would be a character with the ability to summon the purest energies or the demons of hell. Making him neither good, nor evil.

Like the three Skill trees (this is making an assumption there are 3) would be

Unholy-
Spells include Auras that weaken enemies or enrage your character with extra strength. Possibly Curses against the opponent. With a little bit of the shadow disciplines known as an assassin

Holy-
Healing Auras like Prayer, Holy bolt, and more defensive auras. Along with attacks of a more holy nature.

Combat Skills-
Typical martial arts skills, and melee attacks.

In a way this monk would be like a blend between Assassin/Paladin, but possibly have curses like a necromancer.

my one gripe with the paladin is that his two trees were devoted to auras, of which he could only use 1 at a time.

If they have an aura character I would rather see an overlapping system where you can have an aura hurting enemies and an aura helping allies. Or just do away with positive auras and call them blessings or something.

I'm not a big fan of holy and unholy characters. I would rather just see a single character.

A monk based on a cult obsessed with death as good and evil would be pretty decent I guess. Deathmonk.
