So I decided to buy the Battlechest for the extra Diablo 2 cd key and since I got the original game along with it, I have decided to try it out.
I am playing it with a friend (who is using spawn) over battlenet. What I'm really wondering is what exactly happens when you die? Do you lose all your equipment onto the floor? Is there something else I'm missing? The electronic manual doesnt really cover death (using find function i could find anything). Also, there are TPs in this game right?
From what I can tell there is no body/corpse run like in diablo 2.
Thanks in advance guys, sorry for the very newbie questions.
when you die in multiplayer, you drop everything you have equipped and have only the option to restart in town. You must make your way back to the dungeon and kill or avoid the monsters near your corpse, to reacquire your equipment. It's pretty hardcore, pun not intended. And when you pick up your stuff, you do not auto-equip it, as in D2. You have to open your inventory and put each item on individually, often in the correct order to let your strength bonuses stack up and enable your heavier armor/weapon.
One benefit: you can use TK over walls or anywhere in sight to pick up anything you dropped. And every character can have destructive spells to use while naked, though obviously the Sorcerer has the least trouble playing naked. Learn to stone curse widely and put on your equipment very quickly. Pick stuff up with the inventory window open, for faster assembly.
It's wise to open a town portal somewhere safe on each new level, and if you're a warrior or a rogue it's a good idea to leave some spare equipment in town. A rogue can do pretty well with just a bow, firing from a distance down long corridors.
In Single Player there is no restart in town option. You can only load from your last saved game, which is easier, but can be very annoying if you've been playing for a while and forgot to save your progress.

And when you pick up your stuff, you do not auto-equip it, as in D2.
That's not true. You'll automatically equip any item you pick up that you can weild via stat requirements if you have that slot free.
For example, a big problem during item-recovery is accidentally clicking on some junk item (like a short sword) on the way to your corpse, so then when you go to pick up your Dreamflange, it goes straight to your INV or flips on the ground if your INV is full. This can easily result in death if you were counting on stats from the dreamflange to help save you (+1 spell levels, extra mana and the high magic resist being the big ones). This has happened to me several times.
Generally having to pick things manually out of your INV will most be a problem for the rogue and sorc, who would be using +stat items like rings/amulets in order to wear heaver weapons and armor, whereas the warrior should be able to equip almost anything without stat items.
Death in MP is a big reason for never wanting to play a solo game on battle.net. If you want to play solo MP, do a local LAN/IPX game with only your self in it. If you play on battle.net and you die, and then your connection to b.net gets reset, the game will vanish and all your items with it.
Incidentally when you get killed by another player, you don't drop your items, just some gold (1/2 of it?) and an ear. This leads to what is called MKing, where another player that you can't trust will lure you into a situation where the monsters will kill you, so that all your items drop and they can steal them. Normally this would be done by a sorc or rogue character because they can quickly kill from a distance (and especially pretend it was an accident). Then when your corpse is surrounded by enemies they can cast resurrect on you, which brings you back with 10 hps - probably enough for the monsters to kill you and for them to then steal all your items.
If you play on battle.net and you die, and then your connection to b.net gets reset, the game will vanish and all your items with it.
Thats not true. You stay in your game if your connection to Battle.net gets reset, and can stay in it as long as you want to.

I guess this is an sp/mp difference, since I've been playing SP Hellfire on and off the past few months, and it's been annoying me the whole time that I don't equip items when I pick them up early on. Leather armor and skull caps and such I find with new chars, I click on and assume I'm using, and when I open the inventory sometime later they're just sitting in it, while my character is still naked.
I think also you don't equip anything if you TK it up, rather than clicking on it, and probably i was remembering that also; grabbing my stuff over a wall with only half the screen to view the action on while trying to re-equip. It's been a while... I've not played MP D1 in years, so I should probably refresh my memory. I was having to think hard to remember how the heal other and resurrect spells worked, while doing the spellbooks page (http://diablo2.diablowiki.net/D1_Spellbooks#Phasing) in the wiki this weekend.

Yeah, TK would definitely put the items into your INV, I recall that. I'm 100% sure that weapons definitely go into your arms if you're not wearing anything, but I'm not as sure about armor/helm/rings/amulets (pretty sure, but not 100%).
