View Full Version : Unique classes anyone?

Am I the only one who wants to see completely new classes? Yeah it would be cool to re-work some of the older ones but I would rather see something brand new. I don't want to go play D3 when it's released and feel like I'm playing a redone version of D2. Some stuff will carry over but I am hoping for as little familiarity as possible as far as classes go.
Yeah, it'd be great if the new classes are totally different from previous classes. I think there's enough diversity in world cultures and styles for Blizzard to draw in distinctly fun and unique classes.
Or even concept classes, such as a tactician, who would play as an RTS with hirelings, formations, flanking, and other means of support play.

I completely agree with the OP. I was hoping the old chrs from d2 could either get wiped out or just be NPC's in town.

yeah, all-new classes would be great, but like the barb as basic fighter, there's gotta be a basic spell caster, like the sorc in d2. the wd has elements of necromancy, which i would also consider to be a basic sort of must-have ability/class for an rpg like this. they will also have a ranged char that will be a lot like the ama, im sure. the question is, how creative are the blizzard people in incorporating popular but old and somewhat worn-out skills in new character classes. i think the wd, though not very original, does a decent job of combining the lame necro and ele dudu skills.
That's what i'd like to see and that's what they're doing ;)

In all rpgs, theres a ranger, a summoner, a spellcaster and a fighter. Therefore teh classes won't "change" even though the names change.

really there is only so many ways to kill things and whatever they come up with will probably have already been done by another game. so pretty much it comes down to putting your own spin on the standard class, the witch doctor is a good example of it imo
What about a mage slaying assasin that uses technologicaly advanced magical 'minions' Oh...
No, everyone wants to see new classes. Theres really not much to speculate on as like has been stated, theres only so many ways to kill something.

how about some mix of race and class we already have both sexes of the known classes ????

Hence the Barbarian returning, since they couldn't think of a melee battling brute that was different enough to change the name. I'm wondering how they'll pull it off with the mages; necromancers, amazons, assassins, druids, and paladins were pretty specific, with a game fiction and a set types of skills. But the sorceress was basically an updated sorcerer from d1, and both were quite archetypal magic users. They've got to have a magic user/caster mage type char in D3, don't they? So how are the reinventing it enough that we won't all be like, "It's just a Sorceress with different elements."
That's the situation now with the WD vs. Necromancer, though that impression might be quite flawed, since we're judging by a few short looks and some skill descriptions. The characters probably play a great deal differently in actual practice, from what Jay and other bliz dudes have said, and comparisons between WD and Necro will seem irrelevant once we actually get to play the WD?

How about a class that summons minions and deals with poisons and curses?
Oh... I forgot.
The necromancer is in.
But he has come out of the closet and has broken his neck and knees in twain.
Seriously.
How about bringing back all the old classes with new appearances and new skills?
Win-win, am I rite?
No-no -- the necromancer MUST be renamed to quack (or witch doctor -- if you prefer, it IS the same thing -- and the doctor in witch doctor DOES refer to men in white suits, and the reason they were called "witch doctors" refers to the fact that witch doctors sold medicine that cured the devil's works in good old England centuries ago. Not african shamans, witch doctor is originally good old english quacks, and shaman is the original term for african guys performing voodo. Why oh why did they not call him shaman?)
No-no! The sorcerer must be renamed "silly person with a metal rod" -- which at the least DOESN'T try to hide under a fancy name like shaman who calls himself english exorsism-potion salesman aka witch doctor -- without the meaning of the title "silly person with a metal rod" beeing any less silly than "witch doctor".
Nono! The holy paladin must be renamed cleric! Guess what, he will have Bl... Concecrated hamm... Orbs that he can cast that will go in circles around him clo... counter-clockwise dealing phy... magical and ma... physical damage!!!
No-No-No! The assassin and amazon MUST be combined into a single class with a mix of their skills, called rogue, that way people get half of the class they loved and new players will love reused skills because the character's name is rogue instead of amazonassassin!

Oh look, correlation between Shaman's, Witch Doctor's and their origins:
The word shaman is in fact loosely used for almost any savage witch doctor who becomes frenzied and has communication with spirits. In its original form it appears to be a corruption of the Sanskrit Shramana, which, indicating a disciple of Buddha, among the Mongolians became synonymous with magician.[2]
Shaman pronounced /ˈʃɑːmən/, /ˈʃeɪmən/, (|ˈshämən; ˈshā-|) noun (pl. -man(s)) originally referred to the traditional healers of Turkic-Mongol areas such as Northern Asia (Siberia) and Mongolia; šamán being the Turkic-Tungus word for such a practitioner and meaning "he or she who knows."[3][4] Other scholars assert that the word comes directly from the Manchu language, and indeed is "the only commonly used English word that is a loan from this language".[5]
The proper plural form of the word is shaman. Shaman is correct for both a male and female shaman.
In contemporary English language usage, shaman has become interchangeable with the older English language pejorative term witch doctor. This is anthropologically inaccurate, and has raised objections among academics and traditional healers, who assert the word comes from a specific place, people, and set of practices.
What is your post on about? Seriously? It's just a rant that makes zero sense.

Agree.
Someone says "Witch Doctor" you think of pretty much what they've made, specifically with the big mask though of course :)
Historical accuracy (especially EARTH history) is meaningless in a FANSTASY game which is NOT based on Earth...
It's just like the Amazons - people typically think of busty blondes with legs up to wazoo, but strong fighters. Newsflash - they weren't like that!
As for the rest of the rant - there is an element of total fairness in it with people demanding classes which are just carbon-copies of the D2 classes, or mixtures of them.

You guys aren't trying very hard. There ARE original chrs out there who have not yet appeared in big time RPGs. There ARE ways of killing things that have not yet been covered extensively. Here are just a few:
Exposure--you kill monsters by cooling the temperature of a huge area hitting almost all monsters for small damage over time. You can up the damage by adding wind, snow, freezing rain, and other things that make the environment too harsh for monsters in their natural habitat.
Starvation-You simply trap the mosnters in pits or in fences (like bone prisons only permanent prisons, not made of bone of course, maybe ivy walls or w/e), then an hour later you watch your exp bar climb up as everything starts to die of starvation.
Acid damage-acid rain, holy water that works as acid on evil monsters, spitting acid, etc. Acid hasn't been used all that much has it?
Disease-We may be starting to see a new wave of this in WD skills in d3. The possibilities are endless here. Lots of new turf to break in with chrs who specialize in killing their enemies with germ warfare.
Suicide-forcing mobs off cliffs or into bodies of water with fear and mind control.
Speaking of fear-psychic attacks where you scare or mentally shock things to death. It's not very visually spectacular, but something falling down dead for no apparent reason would be creepy in itself.
Aging--decripify in a more literal and permanent sense. Enemies rapidly grow old and die.
Constriction-etc, etc.
Suffocation-etc, etc.
Burrying-etc, etc.
Dream slaying-Getting wierd here, but Freddy Krugar style where you appear in your enemy's dreams and kill them with illusions and apparitions of monsters you design, but the caster is also subject to getting hurt in the dream world. Damage is all in the mind which translates into real hit point loss like illusionary fire in D&D.
Some of these have likely been used, as I haven't kept up to date with recent RPGs, but not all of them and not to the point of nausa like swords arrows and lightning.
Just take a few of these methods, put a colorful toon behind them, balance the skills out, come up with reasonable in-story excuses as to why things starve to death quickly, and you got yourself a hero class no one has ever heard of.
It doesn't have to be fighter, ranger, mage.
