View Full Version : My two cents on the new art style. Thoughts?

Well here's my two cents about color/art choice. Personally I think that "Necromancers Choice" owns blizzards current direction for color design. I think a lot Diablo loyalists would agree that they want creepy, deep, dark dungeons. At the same time I can respect the fact that they want to upgrade the color and graphics of the game. I think that it wouldn't be so bad if they wanted to make the sun shine outside a little along with added some more color outside, although I would still like to see at least SOME dark nasty weather. But even if they want to throw in rainbows... after rain... just a few? .... ok its hard seeing rainbows in diablo, perhaps that’s a poor choice, but if they want greener grass and more vibrant backrounds in some areas that ok. But when I am hacking away outside on whatever beasts/monsters I happen to be laying waste to, I want to know that I entered a new place when I have entered a dungeon. I think here the mood should change. I want to not know where I am or what I'm getting into. So if we talk about realism I think that color and bright can be ok for OUTSIDE, but in almost every dungeon situation, it should be dark. I want to feel the scariness. I don't want to know what is around those corners, and I don't want that green/blue (hey, howd that light get in here!?) invading on my perfectly dark dungeon. The biggest thing that I would see as a problem with darker dungeons is the new destructible environment system. How can I shoot down the wall on some zombies if i can't see the wall? Where I do like the idea of light radius, it may be to complicated with the system that they have already implemented. I would be happy with just removing some of those blue/greens in the dungeons for some god old fashion shodow, even if the area on screen is still entirely viewable. As far as equipment goes... well big shoulders are very nice on the lady... but maybe it could use a tone down or two perhaps. It does look a little more than a little wowy. Whatever blizzard decides to do, I'm sure 99% of people will still play the game, I know I will. And I'm sure Ill have a kick %&* time playing it. I support blizzard and there wahtever decisions they make because, hey, ill be honest, they have NEVER let me down in a damn good gaming experience with all of there awsome games. So keep your smooth edges and all the new 3-d aswomeness(really i think its gonna look cool) but maybe make a few less blue/greens and more DIABLO, at least in the dungeons!! Keep trucking Blizzard and if you think that making dungeons a little darker for 52,000+ fans isn't really worth it then so be it, HEY, I'm lazy too. Just make us a good game and get it out here. Wow I vented for longer than anticipated. WHAT DO YA'LL THINK? ARE THE PROBLEMS WITH CHANGING THE COLOR TOO GREAT? SOLUTIONS?

1. This is not really a Technical Issue.
2. There are dozens of topics about this in generell discussion. Do a search there. ;)

Discuss D3's game engine, color palette, play speed, Battle.net aspects, and other techy stuff here.
Seems ok to me. There ARE plenty of other threads on the topic though, you could always post your thoughts in those ones, although I admit, most of them have been pretty inactive.

Just a friendly tip from me:
Use paragraphs and spacing between them.
Unless you like to post walls of text. If that is your goal then you are on the right track.
And now your question.
I think there are indeed problems with changing the color, because that would be yet another revision for the D3 team after they already had many revisions and since they settled on this one, changing it will turn them all into sillies who can't decide on what they want.
Another problem with changing the colors is that it will be changing something that the majority of the people like. While there are indeed a lot who would want it a bit more grittier and dark, they are not the majority.
And is also hard to change a hundred of textures just for a grittier look -_-
Glad to see this topic is mature still, hope it stays this way.
Although I agree that DIII would look nicer with the grittier dark look, we can't do too much about it. I myself, LOVED the light radius and not seeing whats going on around me, and other people probably don't understand and ask "why the hell would anyone like that?" Well, it's a taste a handful of people enjoy.
I like the atmosphere of, "chaos is emerging" and not "a hero is coming" (which is the way DIII is currently feeling to me). I like my character to feel small, in constant danger, being just another person trying to fight his way to survive evil, which is what the light radius and darkness brings. Currently, DIII makes me feel like I'm a hero packed and ready to vanquish demons, which is ok but not my instant choice of flavor. I'm still buying the game nonetheless.
But look on the bright side, I would bet that sometime in the future, some fan based team will attempt to create a hack to lower the color and make it grittier. Now with the new B.net, I don't know if it will succeed or even if Blizzard will allow it, but we can all hope I guess.

The D3 developers already said that they experimented with making it grittier. While this certainly looked good on stills, it did not look good on a moving image.
Changing the color settings can be done by most graphic cards already. So no hack needed there.
