k, sorry if this is a repost, cuz i've searched the threads quickly and havent found this as a single thread idea.. plus its tedious to go through all the posts and search...
that being said....
There should be some sort of item storage system to remove muling, which is probably the single most tedious and annoying workaround to storing many items in diablo 2. Why should I have to make a handful of extra level 1 characters to store my items, when those slots could be used for actual characters I would like to play/progress with. Not all of us play multiple accounts and have multiple cd-keys (although this is probably something blizzard likes, profit wise)..
There are numerous concepts for an item storage system, so I can just reitterate a list of some suggestions.
What I personally think would work best, is an NPC that handles item storage, AS WELL as a stash. Stash is useful for quick access storage of items, such as items (gems/runes/etc) you wish to transmute, secondary equipment you like to swap around, or that 1-2 items you found recently for your friend. NPC item storage would be in regards to long-term storage, or items you are holding onto and wish to trade, or save for crafting for a later time.
Item storage via NPC should allow you almost an unlimited amount of storage space. However, if this causes problems due to database overload or whatever, you can perhaps start with 1 "page" of storage space for free, and pay either a fixed, or daily/weekly/monthly price (in gold - lets actually make gold useful for once) for additional storage "pages". Every extra storage place can cost an increasing amount of gold as well, to control excessive storage space if one wishes. So as an example, my second storage 'page' will cost me X amount of gold per day, and my 3rd storage 'page' will cost me X(x2) gold per day (or x3/4/5/whatever). Also, for those who wish to take a break from playing for an extended period of time, there should be an option for longer term payments, such as months for certain in this kind of system.
This thread is not to comment on the transfer of items from character to character, but simply to address removing the need to transfer merely for the purpose of storage. I've read other posts that suggest easier methods of transfering items, as a solution to the tediousness of storage transfer, but why not just remove that necessity completely, as suggested above.
Any opinions or comments, or expanded ideas on this one?
As perhaps a quick suggestion of discussion (something I've already thought about just now after reading my own post) is for example, what kind of penalties will incurred for not paying/missing a payment when items have alreayd been deposited in an extra 'page'. Perhaps a sum of items' values (if sold to NPC) will be used to force the payment, and you will lose those items from your storage (aka they will be junked to cover costs)...and when you are out of items in that 'page' to cover costs, that page will be removed.
Just some things to think about..
Cheers,
