- Introduction. Is Fast Eddie really that fast?

Hello, Fast Eddie here. I have been playing D2 for about four years now. I don’t count the period when I bought the game in 2003, made a Barbarian, put all my points in Bash, died to Blood Raven, and hated the game for nearly a year.

When I returned, I spent most of my time on BNet, gaining a L87 Barbarian and a L84 FishyMancer (ironically I used the guide from here, but didn’t then harness the true power of the SPF). However like some people on BNet I still knew naff-all about the game, and am still learning things today. I started SPing in 2006, and found the forums later that year. It is my one true escape from RL, and like nearly everyone here, I spend more time lurking and talking about finding a Ber than actually doing something about it. My favourite classes are Sorcs and Necros, but I’d love to diversify my portfolio.

The one thing I missed about BNet was the silly chit-chat and banter, which is why you may have seen me desperately lurking in the MP forum at 3AM trying to score a fix of multiplayer action. With Hamachi, some guidelines, and some like-minded people who can’t host but wish they could, I hope to kickstart the MP forum so everyone can find a Tyreal’s before D3.

- SPF Formalities a.k.a. Where I Try Not To Be Condescending

As elitist and snobbish as it may sound, the only way to join the current network is to PM me for the network name and network password. Of course, you can set up your own network, but at this moment in time the network we condone here is secure*, with only registered forum members on there, and I’d like for it to stay that way. I have been a forum member for some time, and have been given the go ahead to try and steer this in the best possible direction I can.

Upon registration to the network, your application must be confirmed by me for you to fully join the network. Now I know how holier-than-thou this makes me sound, but again it is purely to protect the legit-ness of the SPF and also to obey the rules laid out here. If you feel you need someone’s help straight away, but they can’t join the network instantly because I’m not online, then I’m afraid that’s hard cheese, and you’ve got no dice. This is mainly a precaution to protect against those people that have been added as ‘friends-of-friends’ who may not be registered with the SPF. It may not happen, but I’d rather not have to delete my whole stash after taking that chance.

* By secure I do not only mean every person is an SPF member, but also that they have an intro thread etc, (and currently are the same mod status) and we all have access to such information on the forums.

- How Do I Hamatch?

I know some of you will already know how to use Hamachi, but some people are downloading the program just to MP and therefore may need some guidance. Hamachi is an application that can generate a fully-functional virtual LAN with no extra configurations. It can be downloaded here (https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/list.asp). It also comes with built-in Instant Messaging, which can quickly aid hosting problems or last-minute muling notifications. In layman’s terms it can enable someone who cannot host a game of D2 to host, and can save a lot of time with people checking PMs and thread updates and edits etc.

First off, unless you wish to install to a custom directory, the default Hamachi install settings will be fine and dandy for your MP needs. However, there are a couple of tweaks that may benefit your experience of Hamachi, including:

- In ‘Window’ under the preferences menu, there is an option to only show those persons in the network who are online. It can be handy, but I leave it switched off.

- In ‘Window’ under the preferences menu, there is an option to change what happens when you double-click on a member. By default it is set to ‘Ping’ but I find it easier to change it to ‘Send Instant Message’ (a.k.a. Open IM Chat Window).

- Just because a member’s Hamachi is left on, does not mean that they wish to MP, let alone have a char in the Act and difficulty you require help on. I doubt I speak for everyone but I for one have my Hamachi start up when my PC boots, and after a nine hour shift at 2AM Sunday morning the last thing I want to do is MP. Give me five minutes and a cold beer... An acceptable state of affairs would be one polite IM asking if they can MP in your favoured act/difficulty. However a ‘game up’ message should be posted in the forums, as to be discussed later.

- Right-clicking on a member’s IP can let you ping them, giving you an idea of connection speed as well as whether you would be able to connect to this host. It can also let you copy their IP address to paste in D2 in the TCP/IP menu.

- Right-clicking on a member’s IP can give you the Chat option, to IM with them. Again, it’s just that much quicker than forum refreshing/PMs but some folk may not like it/use it.

- Right-clicking on a member’s IP can give you an option to Set Label. If you click on Custom you are able to change the name that displays for that Hamachi member on your Hamachi front-end. You may want it to be identical to their forum name or change it to a word that reminds you of them.

- Double-clicking on the name of the network changes your status to offline (and vice-versa). This can be handy if you have other Hamachi networks, or simply don't want to MP but wish to leave the program running.

Once you have organised a game thorugh the forums (preferably) or IM, the IP you must connect to is the simulated Hamachi IP which begins 5.xxx.xxx.xxx. This is not the 192.xxx.xxx.xxx that D2 suggests, or the external IP gained from www.whatsmyip.org. You may need to disable your firewall. If you have a seperate firewall application (as opposed to Windows Firewall) you may not need to, as Windows Firewall is more strict than some other applications. Making an exception for Hamachi in Windows Firewall does not work, you can't host if Windows Firewall is on.

- SPF Hamachi Etiquette

There are already set rules on how to politely and successfully MP on the forums here (http://forums.diii.net/showthread.php?p=4904901#post4904901). However there are a few pointers (merely pointers) that can enhance SPHamMP. These are:

- Post a game up or game suggestion in the forums. This will not only tell all the Hamachi members you are LFG (for lack of a better phrase) but also the non-Hamachi members as well. If they can host, then you’ve got yourself an extra player to kill some baddies with!

- Once you are hosting a game, YOU are in charge of the game. This mean the standard MP rules, including but not limited to: Your pace, your drop rules, and you reserving the right to check up on a member before you feel comfortable MPing with them, including whether they are allowed to currently MP (they may have an infraction/ban). To date every member has an intro thread posted in the SPF (except Nagisa), and now that I am switching to Manual Approval this should long continue. Again, you are all free to create your own network(s) should you not like my rules or judgement.

- I have PM’d both SPF mods regarding the setup, continuation and maintenance of this network. This is not a threat of any sort, but due to the fact that the network has a significant amount of members, including some well-respected old-timers, purely a notification. Together with the fact that I begin the final year of my degree this year, I may not be around for help.

- Current SPF Hamachi Members

Links are to intro threads. This will hopefully provide a quick link for Hamachi Hosts, or in the case of Cheese on Toast's intro, an insight into world views on vegemite and marmite.

Initally I would appreciate it if you reply to this thread for any questions/comments you have. This way they can be shown to and answered by the group/forum as a whole. However, I can also be reached by forum PM, and as a last resort (and if you are already a member of the network) Hamachi IM.

Wow. A great honour, thank you.

I just want everyone to MP! It's disheartening to see so many missed games on the forums.

Please welcome our newest member, Mr Bob T. Warrior!

@ Bob below: Have added that into the FAQ for Mr Justin Case.

@ All: The FAQ is updated. Fixed some typos and added a few lines about Windows Firewall.

Simple and easy to join, thanks Fast Eddie.

BTW to all: Making an exception for hamachi in Windows Firewall does not work, you can't host if Windows Firewall is on. At least, not with this simple change. I suppose there is some way to setup the connection, but I'll be darned if I know how to do it :)

Not as fast as I used to be. Yet another promising athletics career that lost the battle to Cornwall's influx of black tar heroin in the late nineties. :dopey:

So I saw yesterday that you were hosting a game and you said it was over hamachi, is there a way for those of us not using hamachi to join without getting hamachi?

Fast Eddie
16-09-2008, 13:53
I'm afraid not Moo-Cow. The virtual server that Hamachi generates is inaccessible to those without the program.

Kyrandia
17-09-2008, 11:34
"The virtual server that Hamachi generates is inaccessible to those without the program"
Because it uses an IP range that is reserved for private LANs, 5.225.xxx.xxx. The address won't resolve if you're not running Hamachi.

"@ All: Kyrandia has added a second account to the network."
Not because I'm schizo but because I installed Hamachi both on my desktop and my laptop and the program assigned me a different IP for both machines.
Is there a way to transfer a Hamachi account from 1 pc to another in order to avoid this?

Fast Eddie
17-09-2008, 12:50
Is there a way to transfer a Hamachi account from 1 pc to another in order to avoid this?

Well I've been scanning through Hamachi for options like this but haven't been able to find one. It's alright for the should term but should interest skyrocket again there's only a maximum of 50 people allowed on one network I believe, so we'd have to limit the network to one account per person.

Will Hamachi let me MP through a router I have no way of configuring?

Will Hamachi let me MP through a router I have no way of configuring?

I don't see why it shouldn't. Anyone offer some tech advice on this? It wouldn't hurt to try. I can PM you the Hamachi details on further request if you'd like to try.

Eddie.

Thanks in advance Fast Eddie (btw I got confused when you introduced yourself as Fast Edward in Dune's MP game)

EDIT: it does work, yay....

21-09-2008, 01:32
The simplified technical answer is yes and no. It will allow you to get through most standard ones, but some enterprise routers will make it impossible. I could give more information, but unless you're a network admin, the easier option is to just try it.

CoRnJuLiOx
21-09-2008, 02:37
The website says it will work with your existing router with no additional configuration. So unless you really ARE behind some enterprise router, you shouldn't have a problem. I was able to start using it without having to configure anything related to my router. Now if only people were on so I could play....

@ Cheese: Spud has already suggested it in a different thread. But the thread died. Like him. Where's he been this last weekend? :P

@ All: Maybe post some availability for a larger MP game? Maybe ask your wife/gf/life for just *some* time off? Not counting Kyrandia's double accounts we have a whopping 15 people on the network.

My availability (GMT +1)

Tuesday - all day
Wednesday - all day
Friday - all day
Sunday 10PM-I-should-go-to-college-now

as well as other free periods now and again...

Just to let all know I have finally got around to editing everyone's intro thread links back in after they got deleted. This will be the final update to the FAQ until a necessary change is required, or the network gets new member(s).

Of course, continue to post questions, comments and suggestions here, as that is what the thread is for.

Thanks.

Hi guys, having issues

When I start Hamachi, it says it cannot find the Hamachi Network Adaptor, and suggests reading the forums at forums.hamachi.cc, it is fully allowed through zonealarm, and I havent fiddled with it since I last MPed

When I click on the link Firefox3 won't accept the site because it doesn't have a security certificate

Any idea what's going on? (no its not the ghost of Windows firewall haunting me)

Fast Eddie
12-10-2008, 22:19
Has your trial version of Hamachi expired since you last MP'd?

Mine has. Earlier today I got a message saying I wasn't pinging very well with Kyrandia, but I never followed it up to any extent. Not sure if the expiry prevents or limits connectivity (for our purposes 'MP'), and I won't be until I can test it with someone.

Sorry I can't help more.

Ive had this happen and it was because i had a it installed ona different drive than my windows drive (C:) when i formatted and re-installed windows, i thought i would work right out of the box - nope, had to delete it all (hamachi stuff) and re-install, heres a link to the direct download :D

Hamachi 1.0.3 (http://www.filehippo.com/download/file/ebdc77cd89d0eee8ef52110213a68150d5264e29b05f58b770 95b863eb2d8e51/)

CoT: it's on the C drive. and worked before with this setup

So this means every time the trial runs out I have to reinstall and get a new Hamachi IP/invitation to the network?

Fast Eddie
16-10-2008, 00:47
Well CoT et moi just played some MP over Hamachi, and this is after my trial ran out: For three hours in the early afternoon it worked fine, and as soon as it hit evening our lag hit mountainous proportions.

Devastating.

If more happens I will report here, but that's all I have for now.

lionheartthebrave
19-10-2008, 21:23
I reinstalled the Hamachi program, and now i can access the network

Thanks to those you offered advice, guess it corrupted somehow

EDIT: what does that flashing green star by your name mean FE?

EDIT2: you are now unreachable FE

Kyrandia
19-10-2008, 22:45
This unreachable thing puzzles me too. Sometimes it helps to simply restart hamachi, sometimes it doesn't.

Fast Eddie
19-10-2008, 23:55
To be honest even as the host of the network I don't know that much about the program. You may be better off asking Cheese On Toast, but as he is very hard to get hold of, PMing him may have a batter success rate than simply posting here.

Recently as I stated, my trial licence expired and I've only had very limited MP since. I've also had strange interwebs troubles. I "lost" the internet for 24 hours and everything in my limited repetoire could not get it back until it magically reappeared.

It may have been BT temp-banning me for trying to download 20 films and 50 albums at once, but dammit I needed them!

I suggest the best anyone can do is just post updates, ideas and suggestions. I doubt anyone will purchase the full version of Hamchi just to MP on an eight year old game, so I'm as lost as some of you.

Kyrandia
21-10-2008, 20:13
I doubt anyone will purchase the full version of Hamchi just to MP on an eight year old game, so I'm as lost as some of you.

I don't think that is necessary. Hamachi is free for non-commercial use. I too got the "license expired" message at some point, but I simply downloaded a new version and it has been working fine ever since. (It also says "Non-Commercial License" now when I move the mouse over the blue star at the top right of the window.)

Have you tried redownloading/reinstalling?

Fast Eddie
21-10-2008, 20:40
Oh really? Well I guess I just didn't think it would be that simple :P I will try to look at that when I am next free.

Have you tried redownloading/reinstalling?

This worked fine and solved my Hamachi problems.

Now if I could only minimise lag...
