Dumb question probably but does Diablo 1 run under Windows XP?

I've been playing on and off for the last year or so and it works fine for me in XP.

Sorry for the rez scroll here, but I have a friend that cannot play D1 in XP. I'm trying to bring him (and other friends) into the world of Diablo, but he is having trouble starting D1.

When he enters the game and skips the Blizzard logo, the game freezes. Sometimes it freezes in the starting menu. Or, most commonly, he gets 1/4 of the screen black and the rest with intermitent black bars...

Any thougths?

Dunno what to tell you, I've never had a problem running Diablo 1 in XP.

What type of XP is it (Home, Professional)? And did he try getting the latest patch for Diablo or is he running the version installed straight off the disc?

Sounds like a video card problem. Sometimes old games don't like new video cards...You should
- Try to patch the game
- Update your video card driver
- Play a little with your video settings (resolution, refresh rate, etc)
- Try to run the game in Win98/Win95 compatible mode (right click on the Diablo shortcut, Compatibiliy, Win98/Win95)

On the Blizzard support page, I have only found this (http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_US&articleId=21644&parentCategoryId&pageNumber=1&categoryId=2656)

Edit: maybe this (http://forums.diii.net/showthread.php?t=742763) thread can help you too

Thanks Arkham and SectorOne for replying.

@Arkham: at first, he just installed the game and got the problem I described. I too sugested the instalation of a patch, 1.09 that is the one I have instaled in my own game. Nonetheless, the problem keeps coming up. He is running XP Home. Like you, I never had any problems running Diablo in XP (and in Vista I had a minor problem updating to 1.09, but I solved it pretty quickly with the help of some topics in this forum).

@SectorOne: We have tryed almost everything you mention. We did not updated the video card though, but we'll get to it. We ran the game in different compatiblity modes and there was a difference in Win95. The game seemed that was going to start, but it immideatly "shutdown", with no error message whatsoever. It was quite odd. I've yet to read the links you left (haven't done it for lack of time) and I'll keep searching for solutions.

Thanks again!
