View Full Version : Pure aesthetics... what's your preferred melee weapon?
Like the title says, what was your favorite (looking and functional) melee weapon in Diablo 2 that you hope will make a comeback in Diablo 3?
Pardon me if your favorite didn't make it on the Poll!
Why in the barbarian forum? Because we used all the melee weapons with deadly results, and dual wielding certain items gave them a better awesome factor.
Edit: Consider Polearms and ilk part of the staves category, sorry for missing that!

No weapons from d2 (and most RPGs) really stand out because they are all essentially the same--they all do physical damage. They come up with 20 different tyes of axes that only differ by a point or 2 of damage.
They need to really make the weapons behave differently. The mod 150% damge to undead or w/e on maces is a good start. Lances hitting from farther back are another good thing. But how are swords any different from axes? They aren't. They just look different.
Daggers should be very noticably faster than any other weapon class. Spears should give you a VERY noticable range attack. Crossbows should not be in the game at all because they just do a bit more damage than bows until you get wf which makes all crossbows obsolete. Polearms should all have knockback. Swords should all have a slight open wounds mod.
As of now, too many weapons are indeed 'pure aesthetics'.

For looks, I loved pretty much all two-handers except for axes. I especially like the two-handed swords' appearance. However, I think they should've kept the requirements far lower- the requirements were as if everyone were trying to use these things one-handed.
All of the axes looked too puny and weak in D2, something I wish was different. Though my most hated weapon, aesthetically, was the crystal sword. It was too bulky, too bright, and overall just didn't really fit.
I would say spears/polearms but you forced me to go 2h axe instead :)
totally left out the spears, sorry guys!
A 2 handed sword in each hand such as a balrog sword or a single 2 handed axe such as a giant axe I guess. 1 hand axes in D2 were visually very dissapointing with a zerker sharing sprites with a hand axe and military pick.

bills and military picks were the biggest waste of bytes in the game, hands down. I always got pissed every time one dropped, because it was just another sh*tty item to not even consider
Mauls! Followed by big axes.
Swords never did it for me on Barbarians for some reason. Not smashy or crushy enough.

Actually, I think bills are the most damaging polearms you can make Insight in without increasing its level requirement. But other than that... :whistling:
5-6 sox war spikes had a use, especially eth, being that they could take a lot of good RWs and had the best base attack speed after stuff like pbs and repeating xbows. For a barb the damage and resale value loss vs a zerker was only very rarely going to be worthwhile, builds like kickers would see more benefit. The uniques were all terrible though. Considering the context I assume bill = crowbill.

A scythe looks awesome.

I meant crowbill, lol, hwanin's justice + skull was a very cheap and easy fix for a merc
1H Axes just seem so powerful. Duel wield them & it just...makes him feel strong.
Although, I'm more the light melee, so Scimitars would be nice....if we had the class to complement them :P Maybe Wizzy, but idk...

I liked using hammers until attack skills were more affected by weapon speeds. Now I'm too poor to use the good hammers.

ooh best aestetic weapon is easily the Halberd (elite version) had the best range and the only really unique skin compared with the other polearms. and everything else all looked the same. (everything being other weapon classes)
i didnt like how 1h weapons could put out more dmg than 2 handed ones. it just did not compute properly. 2 handers always made me feel like i was puttin out more oomph.

I like long swords, one handed or two handed. Something kingly looking. :) Although it would be nice to some katanas in D3. I think these were in D1 (under a different name) but not in D2. Speaking of which, I'd like the samurai armor to make a come back from D1 as well.
Oh, and flails, definitely.
Lances?
Polearms?
Forks?
Scythe?
:S My top 4 isn't even listed on your poll.... They are all from DII also

Axes! Never used them in D2, but I'm hoping they'll make better versions for D3. I liked maces too, but axes IMO have a better "gruesome factor". Certainly not those oversized toothpicks...
