------------------
This is a VERY early work in progress of my Durance of Pain.

Eventually, my Mistress of Pain (http://www.diii.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2364&cat=613) is going to be battling it out with my Witch Doctor (http://www.diii.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2084&cat=500&ppuser=321817) and a Warrior. There is also going to be a bit of story element to go along with the final image, to put it all into perspective.

Very nice! Loads of attention to detail in the new screeny. I like where you're going with the cobwebs idea, what with the mistress looking like a spider and everything.

This scene could make a really good movie as well, can you animate in the program you use?

Leord

Wow, that's fricken awesome! You have done quite a lot of cool stuff, Delowyn. Ever considered making a DiabloWiki page to list them, like this one: Holyknight3000?

I'm the one who made HK make it, so he doesn't have delusions of grandeur or anything, but it's very handy to have an index of the to-be famous Diablo 3 fan artists =)

You have some serious awesome texturing skill. They look awesome. If you still work on this, maybe you should work more with the lightning. I think the color of the lights you use makes the atmosphere too much white. And I could not figure what the blue light at the portal is...I guess you will visualize the portal effect, maybe in blue? Anyways, nice piece of art you made there.

@AkumaSlayer:
Yes, the software can animate.

@Leord:
That sounds like a neat idea. Maybe when I get one or two more walls done, I can look into how to do that.

@Paalt:
Yes, the blue "mystery" light is being cast from the portal, which is not visualized yet. There is still lots more to do.

A new update on the project.

-overhauled the lava and added splattering
-added lots of volume effects
-replaced some textures, improved others (bloody floor, curtain dirtied up, new stone slab texture)
-finally finished the geometry (lava sewer+grate)
-added wrapped bodies, chains, bloody hooks
-experimenting with final lighting and color grading

It's nearing completion. The portal effect is not done still. I output this iteration at its final resolution of 1920x1080 so I can see how everything holds up, so be warned the image below is huge.

Real nice, finished project should be awesome. Out of curiosity, what program are you using? 3DX max?

Leord

Man, that's absolutely positively awesome indeed =)

If you require any assistance with markup or design for a wiki page, just let me know, or ask HK, he should know by now ;)

Also, just remember it's a *wiki entry*, not a personal page, so besides a few quotes of your own language, it's to be very factual and informative. You could make a related page just as a very simple guide on how you did this one, or the mistress of pain for that matter =)

Regardless, keep up the good work! =D

I'm using Softimage XSI.

Thanks Leord. And if I go the wiki route, I'll keep that in mind.

Hehe, just saying, better if you do it than some other happy contributor who get things wrong. ;)

Everything of matter around Diablo and his community will end up there. HK have sure made an impact, and by the looks of it, so will you! You're gonna end up there whether you want it or not, lol ;)

Is this (http://www.dlnexus.com/fan/art/artist/1882.aspx) you btw?

@Leord
Holy <expletive>! How did you find that? HAHA I TOTALLY forgot about that! Yes that is me, and those are mine! Those two pieces were done in Lightwave many, many years ago. Amazing find, thanks for reminding me. I'm sure I have the full size render of those somewhere here. In fact, I think I have the model geometry too. Hmm, might have to resurrect them! I also have a female barbarian floating around the internets somewhere too, on some Lightwave forum I've since forgotten.

I made a wiki entry, as recommended: Delowyn (http://www.diablowiki.net/Delowyn)

Leord

Hehe, I have my ways ;)

Anyway, use the built-in wiki bbcode of the forum for easy linkage to yours or any other wiki page. Just have ][[/B]/WIKI] around a word. If you "Go Advanced" when making a post, there is even a button for it (the Diablo head with a "W" on it).

I made a few updates on the page btw, only link-style and a minor typo. I also added [WIKI]stub for now. Should really do that to HK's page as well at some point, until all major pics are up.

Basically, it's a great reference if you ever post on a guild forum or anywhere else, just link the one page, with links to all pics etc.

You should add this thread there and any other related threads to your work...

Whenever you get the time, I might beat you to it ;) Obviously we'd rather see you do other cool 3D renderings!

If I can make a request, could you make a Fallen in D3-style? Not much art available for fallen, but Bashiok's animated avatar should be of some help...

Delowyn
22-01-2009, 12:55
I took a look at the Fallen. It might be just enough to go by, if you don't mind a lot of improvisation for the parts that are not visible or unclear. I was going to do Tyrael as my next major character project, but I think I can work this in for you, after I finish the Durance of Pain.

Leord
22-01-2009, 13:06
Yey! That's so cool I was thinking we'd add that image to the image gallery of the Fallen article as well. I assume you'll be able to make a few different poses for it?

Oh, and we can make a new thread about it, for now, I'm still in awe of the durance of pain set =)

Oh, and I see you took to using DWiki BBCode =D

Delowyn
22-01-2009, 23:19
Yes, any pose you can think of. Thanks for the BBCode suggestion, it works great!

Delowyn

It's done, complete, finished.

Mephisto had his Durance of Hate, and the Mistress of Pain has her Durance of Pain. Deep in its bowels, the Mistress's Cultists, using the blackest of magicks, have ripped a portal from Heaven. To what end, no one knows. What is known is that even now, the Heroes of Light battle the Mistress to close the portal for good.

I had more story element ideas to go along with it, but I'm too tired to flesh it out. No big deal really.

I had some problems towards the end when integrating everything into one scene. I crashed the software so many times, I've lost count. Vista stayed up and stable though. My computer won't talk to me for a good week after what I've put it through the past couple days, finishing this one up. I tracked the problem down to one rendering option I was using. It doesn't affect the render much, visually, so I toggled it off. For some reason it barfed all over with it on. Comically, it kept crashing with a failure to allocate 113GB (yes, gigabytes) of RAM. Interestingly, the Durance set itself renders fine with it on, but once the characters were imported.....splat. I ended up doing the render in several passes (durance, characters, shadows, mattes) and comping the pieces.

On the page with the widescreen version, I goofed up on the link to the 4:3 version. I can't find a way to edit the description, so maybe Leord can fix it? Thanks man.

Lastly, there is an easter egg in this wallpaper. Well, it's actually an error on my part, an inconsistency, but it's subtle and doesn't really affect it at all. Let's see who can find it.

AkumaSlayer
25-01-2009, 13:51
Wow, looks pretty cool. The witch doctors mask looks especially good here.

I've had problems like yours, where I've made a scene and then imported a high poly model into it only to find it will take days to render. I fixed it by tweaking the render options and changing some of the lights.. this was back when I had a slow computer though.

Now this easter egg... :p I spent a good five minutes looking for it - taking in all the detail you put in - and I think it could be that the warrior and the witch doctor have no weapons. I wouldn't worry making a new render though, it looks complete.

Delowyn
25-01-2009, 14:26
haha Good eye, but that's not it! :smug: It is true that the Witch Doctor has no weapons, but that was by design. I left it out because it was getting visually busy in that area. The WD's head is already blocking a neat wrapped corpse I had leaning against the pillar in the background. You can see it in the previous render. I did put some sparkly powder sprinkling off his right hand. The warrior does actually wield a sword, but most of it is lost in the icy cloud surrounding it. You can just see the tip of it emerge from the top of the cloud. It's blazing white.

Rendering is really fast on this quad core. The whole environment piece only takes a few minutes to render, for example. The problem was that outrageous memory allocation error. 113 gigabytes! It would start calculating final gathering, and BAM. Hilarious. On a whim, I changed the diffuse bounce from 1 to 0, and problem solved.

Anyways, thanks for your interest, it's much appreciated.

AkumaSlayer
25-01-2009, 15:08
Ah, I thought the warrior was shooting some spell - but I can see the sword now. This means that I'm going to have to keep looking for the easter egg. :\

I wonder how much difference the diffuse bounce would make in the render? I suppose the only way you can find out is by investing in 40 sticks of 4gb ram and somehow fitting them in the one computer. :p

Delowyn
25-01-2009, 15:23
haha yes, that would cover it. It's just the characters that aren't using the extra bounce, so what I did was fake the diffuse bounce with a low intensity light, lighting them from below. Tada, cheap diffuse bounce. The final gathering handled the rest.

Holyknight3000
26-01-2009, 00:16
think i said this when i saw the first few renders delo, its the diablo skull lying in the lava on the far right middle. lol

Delowyn
26-01-2009, 07:00
hehe try again, although that would have been a great idea. Those Diablo skulls are on every column, though.

Here is a hint: the error is in one of the repeating objects.

Leord
27-01-2009, 17:49
Man, that's some wicked 3D artwork, D! =D

I'll see what I can do about the linkage tomorrow.

AkumaSlayer
27-01-2009, 20:18
Hmm, it's not the cobwebs is it? The one on the left looks almost invisible (but that may be on purpose). :\

Delowyn
28-01-2009, 00:56
No... couple more days and I'll spill the beans!

AkumaSlayer
28-01-2009, 06:03
I think I may have got it! I spent another 5 minutes looking at the repeating objects and comparing the "clean" durance screenshot to the screenshot with the mistress in it. :p

In the clean screenshot there's a pillar in the centre at the top of the screenshot which is yellow - as it should be - but in the other screenshot it's been changed to gray for some reason.

Compare:

http://www.diii.net/gallery/data/613/medium/dop3.png (http://www.diii.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2463&size=big&cat=613)
http://www.diii.net/gallery/data/550/medium/DuranceOfPain.jpg (http://www.diii.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2476&size=big&cat=500&ppuser=321817)

I hope that's it, cos I'm out of ideas. It's a shame about the WD blocking that corpse, I like how it's sort of slumping against the wall.

Delowyn
28-01-2009, 07:48
You got it! I changed that pillar from a gold material to stone, and neglected to change the other pillar tops to stone also. hahaha

I know, I liked that corpse too. There is another one slumped against the wall back there, though. Look right above the warrior's helmet. It's slumped against the fire tower in the back.

AkumaSlayer
28-01-2009, 09:53
I think the stone does look better. It took me a while to see the other corpse you're talking about as well, it kind of blends into the stone wall behind it.

So, what's next on your list?

Leord
28-01-2009, 16:21
My request of a Fallen! =D

Delowyn
29-01-2009, 00:40
Yes, the Fallen. You'll be happy to know I already started it last night. I got a good amount of the head modeled. I'll start a post when I have a bit more done. Family flew in today, so I won't get to work on it a whole lot for a few days though.

By the way, have you alerted the official boards etc of your "small" setting?

It would definitely be something at least the intelligent fraction of Battle.net users would appreciate.

Delowyn
31-01-2009, 07:04
Hmm, since I'm not sure what you're asking, I'd have to say no. I haven't alerted any other boards of anything. Is the small setting the smaller version of the wallpaper? On the large version page, there is a link to the smaller one. There is also a link to both versions in this thread.

Leord
02-02-2009, 18:39
What I meant was to try and be ironic, lol =)

Point is, that it's a great idea to just post the links to the images (or at least to the gallery page, so your description is there) or even this thread on battle.net.

Diii.net might be the biggest D3 community online, but it's still probably only covers half or less of total Diablo 3 fans.

What I meant was that HK has been posting on several different sites about his wallpapers, that's all =)

Holyknight3000
02-02-2009, 22:20
I did post on bnet one time but you know blizz it faded away and got deleted a week later. Really hate that about the bnet forums...

Anyway of the 5 places i post, obviously diii.net, but diablofans.com, d3gaming.com and diablo3community.com are awesome. d3fans.net however kinda died on me, thinkin about changing to a new place to post i dunno. Ya'll keep an eye out i havent seen any new fansites that have a place for the wallpapers just yet.

But those other 3 websites Delo, i'd post on cause some of em already know ya a little. might help ya!

Alright, super, thanks for the info. I'll see about posting at other places as well.
