View Full Version : I'm Talkin' 'Bout Purple Items, Doofus!

I was watching the gameplay trailer on the official D3 site, and I noticed the Thousand Pounder drops two items: one a normal "Chest Armor" (the video must have been made in really early stages of development if they're naming everything so plainly), and the other item appears to be of the color purple, as it may appear in WoW.

Can anyone confirm official information regarding it (I'm sure I'm not the first to notice this)? Has any info been leaked regarding purple items' 'Class', as in Rare/Unique/Ethereal?

Tenk yoo.

DIII may use different colors to indicate item quality. I imagine purple indicates something better than a magical item.

that's not a bad idea i guess. it was sometimes hard to tell the difference between rare and unique items (for instance, if you were on an unfamiliar pc). perhaps they'll show a difference between ethereal and socketed? or perhaps not.

At blizzcon demo blue items were magical and yellow were rare, just like D2. No purples though.

I've looked at the trailer several times. You'll notice that when the barb gets his new axes, they have purple names. For the trailer, purple meant magic, but they probably changed it back to blue by Blizzcon.

I want them to stick with their color scheme. Grey: inferior, White: Normal, Blue: Magic, Yellow: Rare, Gold: unique, Green: Set. It's what we're used to, although I agree that Yellow and Gold should be a little more different.

I've looked again. The staff and axes are definitely different colors. What could this mean? I theorize it is a new item type, perhaps used in the new customization system that's been hinted.

Purple might also denote dev-only weapons.

hm a new item type? i would only be comfortable with that if it made a deep, dynamic impact on the game.

I'm hoping they add an aura to unique items on the ground (like in HGL), so they're easily visible.

I hope they have LEGENDARY items, one step up from unique :D

purple are Legendary weapon...probly ALOTS stronger then unique...i really would be pissed off if there was no more gold drop...gold is GOLDEN DID YOU SEE WHAT I JUST DID THERE WOOOOOO!!! /wavefingerinfrontofyourface

its not dev only weapon...dev in anygame ive played never had another color scheme for their weapon and gear..it would be a first so i doubt it

so either legendary...probly sure its that TQ,WoW and other rpg now use the same purp color for these kind of item...would be neat to see an Orange one also like in WoW and i dont mean rare :P
or its a replacement for unique which i really hope not...loved the gold colors in my head it now mean TREASURE!!

Yeah, the purple items are probably the same as Legendary in WoW.

I really hope it's kinda the same item system in D3 as in D2.

It would be neat to see as many similarities to WoW as possible.

i want no similaritys to WoW if it can be helped. The whole style, while not realy bad at all, is stil rather colourful and "yay, lets go kill some monsters!" ish. i would not like to see legendary items in D3, for a start how would they function differently from uniques without doing the same as rare and set already do? How could they be a "step up" from uniques without just being exeptional or elite uniques?

Grug

No epic items. I know WoW has some good ideas, but we don't need to copy its color-coded items. Diablo already has a color scheme, and Uniques should remain the best items.

I still think the Purple items are part of some un-announced system. Like how Greens are Set items, Purple could be... socketed? I assume that since Blizz is bringing back socketed items, they'd allow enchanted items to have sockets. Purple = Magic + Sockets?

Yeah, I'm hoping they don't mess with the scheme from D2 too much. Good point whoever mentioned about Purple items (if legendary or whatever) would have to be on a completely different Tier from Rare and Unique items, which I don't see possible because Unique items are named... "Unique!"

I've been wondering...:

Blue items have one stat added, while purple ones have to stats. Imo the colors are just that: A visible difference between "simple" and "complex" magical items. I don't think we'll have seen any of the so called "legendary items" in the material released up to now. (I imagine Blizzards grin on the first "WOW"s on posts commenting the finding of the one or other legendary... Perfectly something I see them heading to *g*)

If there's an item type called "unique", I think it should be... unique ;) As in, there's only ever one of it anywhere. Which would hardly be worth the time to put together ;)

Given that there won't be true uniques, they should rename that category :p

Grug

They're called Uniques not because there;s only one of them, but because each one is a powerful magic item with themed powers. There is getting a Rare pair of boots that give +4 life, +3 defense, and +7% Magic Find. And then there's finding the unique Rabbit's Foot boots with bonuses to Gold find, Magic find, defense, and movement speed. Uniques are designed to be more interesting than the randomized rares and blues.

And again, KEEP DIABLO 2'S ITEM RANKS AND COLORS!

Sass

Don't Uniques drop only one of them per game and others become failed magics / rares? I think that might have been it.

I do kinda vouch uniques being one-of-a-kind like rares are. Perhaps swapping name...

Grug

Rares aren't one-of-a-kind. Rares are the ones with yellow names. Uniques are Gold names. It's hard to tell, but unique names have a little shadow in them.

Rares aren't one-of-a-kind. Rares are the ones with yellow names. Uniques are Gold names. It's hard to tell, but unique names have a little shadow in them. The likely-hood that the exact same rare will spawn is just astronomical. Names might (the famous bone shield bone shields), but the same item? They're basically one-of-a-kind, even if many are very similar (like circlets and the fcr rings).

Uniques however, can be the same much more easily, especially normal ones with little various mods.

Yeah but that's not what "unique" means :(

I know, video games change the meanigs of words all the time. In the Elder Scrolls series, Ebony was treated as type of mineral, when it's actually a type of wood, for instance.

Generations of kids are growing up with perverted vocabularies ;)

It was some volcanic metal that was black and thus called ebony because of the similarities.

If you didn't get it, I was ironic. :girly:

What in the world does that even mean? Do you even know the definition of the word "ironic?"

Perhaps you meant to say sarcastic or facetious? Even then, you should say "I was being sarcastic" rather than "I was sarcastic."

No, that was a paradigm case of irony: "the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning". http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/irony

Findux wins :)

As for ebony in the Elder Scrolls, the devs have admitted in several places that they made a mistake back in the first game, but have stuck to it ever since, since it became part of the lore :)

I really couldn't care about item colors or archetypes honestly. As long as the items are there I'm happy.

I want pink items! And I don't mean the color of the letters, the items themselves should be pink! That would really fit D2's theme imo :jig:
